Future Archive Past Opening Night Performance - Neon Parlour - 30 Jun 2017

Name: Future Archive Past (visual arts exhibition) Frisson (music).

Where: Neon Parlour, 791 High St, Thornbury.

When: Fri 30/Jun/2017 6-9pm.

Please come and see the hauntingly intriguing exhibition by KURTIS ADAMSON, showing June 28 - July 9, with a special guest performance on the opening night, Friday 30 June, from Melbourne based synth and electronics due FRISSION.

OPENING NIGHT PERFOMANCE:

[to be read in David Attenborough's voice] FRISSION is a Melbourne-based duo, with Tim on synth and electronics and Paul on guitar and electronics (although he could feasibly be replaced by a cat with a reverb pedal).

Combining influences from London and South Africa (although you wouldn't be able to tell by listening to the music), it's mostly angular and angsty and brooding and self-involved and dark.  Instrumental, too.

Aiming to be as jarring as possible without actually being kicked off the stage, FRISSION aspire to channel some Böhren und der Club of Gore, or perhaps Coil.  Otherwise, they are inordinately interested in chickens, nuclear winter, and penguins, as well as birds, more generally.

Join us for this intriguing opening experience.

EXHIBITION:

Kurtis Adamson utilises discarded photographic negatives from the early 1900’s to address the relationship between analogue and digital media and the changing perceptions around photographic archives.

Adamson’s solo exhibition ‘Future Archive Past’ examines the hauntological character of analogue-to- digital archives, focusing specifically on the appropriation of unidentified negatives from the photographic archive of Angus McNeil. Angus McNeil was a professional photographer in Adamsom’s childhood town of Kempsey, NSW between1897-1945.

While working as a digital restorer for the McNeil collection, Kurt Adamson was struck by the patina of McNeil’s original negatives and how their “aura” appeared to be erased, or eroded, when onverting them into digital images. This spoke to Adamson’s interest in the act of preservation also being an act of erasure or destruction, and how his art practice can make visible such erasures.

Through employing and developing the notions of ‘disembodiment’ and ‘re-storying’, ‘Future Archive Past’ alludes to the social spectral concerns of digital data collection and identification, whilst also encouraging reflection and contemplation of the digital age we live in as we increasingly create a digital legacy for future generations.

FRISSON

[to be read in David Attenborough's voice] Frisson is a Melbourne-based
duo: Tim on synth and electronics, Paul on guitar and electronics
(although he could feasibly be replaced by a cat with a reverb pedal).
Combining influences from London and South Africa (although you wouldn't
be able to tell by listening to the music), it's mostly angular and
angsty and brooding and self-involved and dark.  Instrumental, too.
Aiming to be as jarring as possible (while not necessarily loud) without
actually being kicked off the stage, they aspire to channel some Böhren
und der Club of Gore, or perhaps Coil.  Otherwise, they are inordinately
interested in chickens, nuclear winter, and penguins, as well as birds,
more generally.

CUPANDBOW

CupAndBow is a box, the box makes noise, the noise is
strange. Experimental, synth, noise and drone music made mostly with
handmade and circuit bent noise boxes.

*Also*, we're still looking for one act to join us!  If you're
interested, drop me an email at paul at denknerd dot org.  Probably
droney / sparse / ambient-ish music would go best with our act, but we'd
like to be open-minded, and diversity is a Good Thing!  We'll each have
about 45+ minutes per set.  Friendly and accepting atmosphere.

Guffond/Ekomane/Lewis - MUMA - 24 Jun 2017

SATURDAY 24th June 1PM MUMA

Jessica Ekomane (FR), Jasmine Guffond (DE/AUS) & Clara Lewis (SE) (editions mego)

Jessica Ekomane [FR/DE]
Jessica Ekomane was born in France. She now lives and works in Berlin. Her practice unfolds around sound installations and music. She creates situations where the sound acts as a transformative element for the space and the audience. This informs her musical compositions which seek a cathartic effect alternating between noise and melody, and playing with our perception of rhythmical structures.

Jasmine Guffond [AUS/DE]
Jasmine Guffond focuses on electronic composition across music and sound art contexts. Her practice spans live performance, recording and the capacity of sound installation to interrogate site.  Working with abstract sound as much as traditional musical forms to create a concordant relationship between a sound that holds emotive power and musicality, and a sensitive microscopic study of electro acoustic phenomena. She has recorded music for CD and 12inch vinyl releases with the Staubgold, Monika Enterprise and Sonic Pieces labels. A new album, Traced is due for release in July 2017 on Sonic Pieces.

Ekomane/Guffond/Nes - LongPlay - 22 Jun 2017

Three artists based in Berlin play live experimental electronics at Longplay cinema! Adhering to no genre, and ranging from sweetly demented to terrifying, yet beautiful.

Silje Nes [NOR/DE]
Silje Nes, Norwegian musician and sound artist. Her work was first known to the public with the release of two albums on British label FatCat Records. In June we welcome the release of her self-released 7-inch «Superimpositions of Metal and Air» on her own label Noko Ana. They feature two instrumental tracks combining electronic sound, field recordings, programming and the use of programmed kinetic sounding objects. Her music is a unique landscape, constantly moving yet always staying in place. The result is something resembling an organism, with a blurring of the line between technology and organic life. Taking interest in spacial and physical manifestations of sound, in her work she explores the creation of environments that will express a certain autonomy, removed from compositorial processes.

67-71 Johnston Street, Collingwood

July 13th
Doors at 8pm, $8 entry
Oksun Ox (NZ)
Snacks (Dale Gorfinkel, Allanah Stewart, Jen Callaway)
Ruff Patch (Tania Price, Lynton Denovan)

Oksun Ox's Ben Holmes from Auckland, NZ (The Hoolie buzzes /Drorgan /Spacesuit..) performs his one-man-band act OKSUN OX!: live finger beats, foot thumping, twanging theremin, hard out riffs, casio boogaloo, sound fx to the maximus + heeeeaps more. He stamps his foot & bellows a passionate croon. He plays keyboard notes with a plastic finger attached to the end of a tiny guitar. He pulls funky frown faces and tells off his children.

“this record is a classic slab of Stabbies-style tongue pressure.. the atmosphere is charged with articulate energy and mystery. What could be more ducky?” - Byron Coley (Wire Magazine)

"fantastic one man band act 'Oksun Ox' is like a mashup of the Skeptics, Residents and Brotown" - a friend

"He frowns cos it gets funky. It is odd, precious & unique music. Like a cross between Prince & Pumice." - Stefan Nevilee (Stabbies etc)
