Cake Industries - Jesse Stevens
Media Artists Jesse Stevens & Dean Petersen have worked under the collaborative pseudonym of Cake Industries since 2006. They are artists, tinkerers and futuristic dreamers. Their practice uses electromechanics, handmade electronics, and robotics to create anthropomorphic and autonomous objects that embrace retro-futurism. Heavily influenced by 1950s science fiction dystopia, Cake Industries’ installations, performances, and sculptural objects anachronistically portray society in order to investigate narratives, culture, reality, and future.

The Birds Conference - La Mama 7-9 Nov 2014

Perhaps this story starts from this phrase: “I am the Truth”

A faith that embraces nothing more than the one Living Truth, animating the hearts of mystics through the ages and across the world.
The story of this performance is based on the 4500-line Iranian epic poem The Conference of the Birds; its captivating poetic style explores the fundamental nature of truth (God, wisdom). The birds of the world, each of which holds special significance, seek out the Simorgh - a mythical Persian bird much like the phoenix.

Brook’s stage adaptation of this 12th-century Persian poem first came on stage in 1979.

Performer, advisor, puppeteer and puppet maker:
Elnaz Sheshgelani

Directors: Lloyd Jones, Scott Mostafa Welsh,
Ren Walters, Rick Evertsz and Kerry Davies

BOLT Ensemble - Footscray Community Arts Centre - 23 Oct 2014

Concert 3 features the BOLT Ensemble and sound machines created by Hullick and Richard Allen over the last 10 years. Schizoid No. 1 defies rationalization through constant and erratic change. It contemplates and trickery of the mind, but what is the mind? The highly conceptual Uno Series features special lighting and video in a series of works that frame one action each. Some are less than one second long while others are static drones. The last piece in this concert is Threshold, created in partnership with the Bionic Ear Institute and cochlear implant users for people with and without cochlear implants. The work revels in the excess of sonic materiality where the careful listener is rewarded by hearing the sounds embedded in the fabric of noise.

Suicide By Cop: Hailing from the heart of Melbourne's industrial west, Suicide by Cop is an audio/visual project with extreme sensibilities, approached with an emphasis on pushing hardware beyond its intended function to create a relentless wall of droning noise and chaotic freeform video.

Sororal soundtrack - Christopher de Groot

Australian giallo film soundtrack released on Swedish label and receives nomination for APRA Film Score of The Year

Australia's first giallo film Sororal is currently making waves at genre film festivals around the world. The soundtrack composed by Northcote based composer Christopher de Groot features a 10-piece brass section, 16-piece choir, two drum kits, electric guitar, electric cello, a barrage of analogue synthesizers and a Hungarian cimbalom. The score takes inspiration from prog-rock, kraut-rock, as well as Bulgarian choir music, 20th Century avant-garde classical works and classic giallo scores from the likes of soundtrack band Goblin and legendary Italian film composer Ennio Morricone.

This unique and bizarre score has been nominated at this years APRA Screen Music Awards for Feature Film Score of The Year.

The soundtrack is released through Screamworks Records [Sweden]

About Sororal
Shot on location in Western Australia Sororal, a Nakatomi Pictures production, is currently making appearances at genre film festivals around the world, and will be the prelude to a performance by legendary Italian soundtrack band Goblin at Grimmfest 2014 in Manchester, UK. Inspired by lurid Italian horror films, Sororal lays claim to being Australia’s first giallo film.

A diverse and bizarre film, Sororal mixes a heady whirlwind of genetic experimentation, mind control, and telekinetic power struggles with twisted artworks. Sororal’s heroine, Cassie (Amanda Woodhams) is a troubled artist who tries to make sense of her vivid, violent dreams by committing her visions to canvas.

Fundraiser Party - Bus - 11 Oct 2014

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ FUNDRAISER PARTY
Justin Fuller, Asps, Cold Life
Saturday 11 October, 6-9pm

To celebrate and mark the final day of our 2014 Editions Fundraiser, Bus Projects will be holding an evening of solo musical-performances, including Justin Fuller, Cold Life and Asps. All acts are local, providing Melbourne with high-quality electronic output, showcasing a particular sound- austere, catchy and dark.

JUSTIN FULLER:
When in solo mode, Justin Fuller (current member of Melbourne's ZOND, TÄX and TOL) delivers a Poly-rhythmic audio assault. A multi layered collision of hums, tones and tremolo pulse, phased, flanged, delayed and distorted, shifting over and under sequenced tones and rhythms.

ASPS:
Asps formed in 2010 as a solo vehicle for Andrea Blake’s (Chrome Dome, Vacuum) experimentations in song-writing and sound design. After the ‘So Long’ cassingle on Nihilistic Orbs in 2011 Asps became a live project with other collaborators including members of Repairs and UV Race. After doing remixes for Miles Brown, Liam Kenny and Multiple Man, Asps has self-released a second cassingle, ‘Swarm’ – a molasses-thick exploration into the elements of dub and dance music.

COLD LIFE:
Cold Life is the new minimal and dark-wave solo electronic project of James Dalgliesh (ex Pro-Life, Slug Guts).

MUSIKUNST OCTOBER 2014

This month at MUSIKUNST we will be asking you to listen closely as Ben Byrne curates an afternoon of voices, modules and patches that traverses from the organic to the synthesised. Please note that for this show we will be utilising the intimacy of the "pool-room" at The EC as our event space for this special presentation of MUSIKUNST. Performing will be:

NADIR

ANTHEA CADDY & MATT DAVIS

ALICE HUI-SHENG CHANG

NADIR
is Alex White (Euro Modular Synth) and Ben Byrne (Laptop with Max/MSP). Alex’s synth is processed and reconfigured. The resulting sound is a combination of the laptop and synthesizers outputs. The music produced is pulsating with opposites. Oscillations and disturbances envelop and saturate one another as a host of possibilities surface, pattern and disintegrate.

ANTHEA CADDY & MATT DAVIS
(Cello & Doepfer respectively) together produce an austere music that collapses the distinction between the acoustic and electronic. Tense lines of oscillation and bowing layer and intertwine, held in place by a powerful sense of space.

ALICE HUI-SHENG CHANG's
work focuses solely on developing extended vocal technique as a means for improvisation and communication. Her vocal explorations include sound from varying tension of physical vocal parts, driving air into alternative passages and vibration of calls and breath. The physical sound produced by a mouth and throat organism, under no computer manipulation, is not only for the artist to be fully involved during performance, but also to challenge the listener with an intimate relationship while receiving. The results of these explorations create a delicate world of primal and vulnerable soundscapes.

Venue opens at Midday and food & drink is available all day

Event runs in The Pool-Room from 2:30 til 5:30 pm

Entry: $10 / $5 conc

Gary Butler gigs - Oct 2014

I've got 3 gigs coming up, and now I need an audience. I'd also really appreciate it if you could forward this information to as many people as possible, because I haven't been in Melbourne long enough to build a proper mailing list and I don't do that new-fangled Facebook/Twitter stuff (I wasn't born to follow, I refuse to ask people to “like me”, and I got bored with people posting pictures of cats and invitations to play online games). So  if you help me get the word out, that would be super.
Tue 7 October (Doors at 8:3 0 pm for a 9:00 pm start) $5/$10
Make It Up Club. I'm collaborating with “Sex On Toast Big Band”. -
Angus Leslie (Conductor), Gary Butler (Guitar, Objects), Ben Harrison (Trumpet, Voice), Cosima Jaala (Voice), Zak Pidd (Voice) Stephen Brooks (Voice), Louis King (Guitar), James Bowers (Keys), Lewis Moody (Keys), Marty Holoubek (Bass), Scott McConnachie (Sax), James Macaulay (Trombone), Gareth Thomson (Drums) & Hudson Whitlock (Drums)
I've bought additional “objects” from the Footscray sex shop specially for this gig, and I've been experimenting with amplifying slices of toast. But wait, there's more. You also get -
Empat Lima & Habits feat. Steph Brett (Guitar, Voice), Rachel Kim (Bass, Voice), Carla Ori (Drums, Voice), Mohini Hillyer & Matt Connoly (Sampler, Keys, Voice, Electronics)
  • Lagerphones feat. Nat Grant (Percussion), James Macaulay (Trombone),Scott McConnachie (Sax), Ben Harrison (Trumpet), Louis King (Guitar) &Marty Holoubek (Bass)

Sun 12 October 12 am. – 8 pm
A General Assembly of Interested Parties , Testing Grounds, 1 – 23 City Rd. Southbank, just behind the Arts Centre.
free entry
Ren Walters organises this one, so check his website: http://www.gaipsite.com

“GAIP is an evolving conversation between artists and the world. On Sunday, October 12th 2014, GAIP will again converse with Testing Grounds, generously providing the perfect place and context for the interaction to continue. A creative, chaotic crowd of artists and interested parties will be co-performing or will just be present together listening, observing.”

Thu 30 October (NOT Wednesday, which is what I stupidly wrote on some of the flyers). 8:00.

Footscray Unaustralian Composers Kollective @ Conduit Art Gallery. (83 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy).

$10

I'm excited about the lineup. The names speak for themselves -

Ernie Althoff, Dave Brown, Gary Butler, Houston Dunleavy, Tom Fryer, Dale Gorfinkel, Lloyd Honeybrook, Paul Kidney, Helena Loziuk, Erick Mitsak, Steve Richards and Jan Bas Bollen.

I'm really hoping that the audience outnumbers the performers, though it is a small venue so it will probably be a somewhat “intimate” show. This is the first Melbourne gig I've organised since moving here, so I hope to make it even crazier than usual. Cat Hope said this about an earlier project: “. . .for all-out crazy chaos, nothing quite beats the free-spirited approach of the Wollongong Anarchist Noisemakers Kollective (WANK).”.Now that WANK has left the gong, I anticipate taking things to the next level with the even freer-spirited Footscray Unaustralian Composers Kollective.

OpenLAB October 5th, Docklands Library

Your BODIES and minds will be BLOWN into the CYBERSPACE of INTERCONNECTIONS in this AMAZING OpenLAB talk.

SRSLY, don't miss this one. YOU WILL REGRET IT!!!

FREE OCTOBER 5th Sunday 2pm at the Docklands Library we have special guests Alison Bennett & John McCormick with Steph Hutchison.
_______________________________________________

ALISON BENNETT is an artist working in photography and digital media currently completing a ‘creative practice as research’ PhD project at Deakin University as a member of the Deakin Motion.Lab. Her PhD work is framed by a question about the reconstitution of photographic surface within digital media. The photographic image has principally shifted from a literal surface – a print – to an interconnected ephemeral surface, a skin-scape, reconstituted via screens and code. In late 2013 a body of work called ‘Shifting Skin’, featuring detailed prints of human skin marked by tattoos overlaid with 3D augmented reality, struck a chord with audiences and went viral internationally. The exhibition has since toured nationally and internationally.

She will also be showing off one of her 3D augmented tattoo photographs as well!!!

JOHN McCORMICK and STEPH HUTCHINSON will be talking about their work EMERGENCE

Emergence by John McCormick, Steph Hutchison and an emerging performing agent, is a duet performed between a human dancer and an artificially intelligent performing agent. The agent has learnt to dance through a rehearsal process with the dancer, sharing the dancer’s movement and style. Emergence sees the dancer and agent co-creating an interactive semi-improvised dance performance. Visualisations of their relationship are projected in glorious Stereoscopic 3D. The neural network based agent uses a motion capture system as its sensory input for understanding the dancer’s movement. In the second part of the performance, Steph uses the knowledge gained from performing with the digital performer to create an intriguingly new dance vocabulary through her process of ex-quiry. A fair trade for the movement she originally taught the agent.

Emergence is the result of John and Steph’s collaborations with Motion.lab and the Centre for Intelligent Systems Research at Deakin University. The artists dreamed of a performance environment that could learn to understand the dancer and collaborate in the creative process of performance making. Emergence is the result.
