OpenLAB August 10th - tomorrow!

2pm SUNDAY the 10th of AUGUST, Free.

This month we’re back at the Media Lab Melbourne space and we have a great pair of guests Dylan Martorell and Ethno Tekh! OpenLAB is here to share and explore the wonderful world of creative makers. Each talk allows artists, musicians, engineers, performers, and designers to come together and share their work and creative passions with the public and other creatives.

This month >>>

Dylan Martorell

Transience, improvisation and collaboration form the basis of Dylan Martorell’s music-based art practice. Housed within the conceptual framework of a musical diaspora, his work is drawn to ways in which music travels through space and is affected by changes in geography, climate, culture and materials to become an agent for cross-cultural reciprocation. Focusing on the use of site-specific gleaned materials and incorporating elements of upcycling, DIY culture, robotics, and alternative power sources, Martorell’s recent projects conducted in Thailand, India, Taiwan,Indonesia, Singapore and Australia have explored concepts of transience, portability and sustainability. He is currently working on a variety of cross-cultural projects combining musical robotics with site-specific community-based interactions.

Ethno Tekh

Ethno Tekh are a Melbourne-based, creative-tech team comprised of Brad Hammond, Chris Vik and Steven Burns. They've spent the last 2 years joining dots between the human and digital worlds by developing creative solutions to novel ideas. Some of the projects they've worked on include motion-controlled performances, installations, hardware controller prototypes, sequencing software for motion simulators, a visual synthesiser and a number of software tools for interaction systems. Together, they have over 7 years of combined experience in the use of motion capture devices for creative applications, engaging audiences at art galleries, public spaces, nightclubs and festivals including Vivid (Sydney), Republika (Croatia), Dark Mofo (Hobart) and a number Australian Pause Fest events. This month Ethno Tekh return to OpenLAB to show their latest work, "Tekh Tonic", a unique 3D controller suite for the Leap Motion; along with their new OSC mapping devices for Ableton Live, a fully modular software synth and a granular synthesiser that works in 3-dimensions.
