Branden W. Joseph “Art and Dirt: Kim Gordon's Aesthetics of Impurity”

Before embarking on her path-breaking career as singer and bassist in Sonic Youth, Kim Gordon was a key artistic and critical voice in New York art, close to celebrated figures including Mike Kelley, Dan Graham, John Knight, Robert Longo and Laurie Anderson. In 1980s artist-run publications like Real Life, ZG, Journal, and FILE, Gordon contributed astute analyses of these and other artists working at the crossover between art and music, at the same time producing exhibitions and installations under the moniker "Design Office".
Branden W. Joseph, editor of Is It My Body?, a collection of Gordon's early art writing published this year on Sternberg Press, will discuss the little known range of Gordon's aesthetic practices and critical views from that time and the continuations of Gordon's artistic practice to the present day.
Over the coming months, in the lead up to Liquid Architecture 2014, Discipline Journal, Gertrude Contemporary and Liquid Architecture will co-present a series of lectures relating to theories of sound, with speakers including Branden W. Joseph, David Grubbs, Douglas Kahn and James Parker. It’s going to be fun. Dates to come.
