New Album from Virtual Proximity

Dream Analysis
By Virtual Proximity

Virtual Proximity’s third album Dream Analysis has been carefully crafted from six hours of raw improvisation, drawing influence from ambient, techno, hiphop and jazz.

Synths and woodwinds are blended with lo-fi drums and earthy field samples, as the music travels through atmospheres ranging from light and airy to dark and strange.

James Annesley: saxophone, flute, clarinet, hand percussion, EWI, field samples, guitar pedals, drum programming.
Tristan Courtney: acoustic and electric double bass, guitar pedals, drum programming.

Tuesday February 4th @ the Make It Up Club

This edition of the Make It Up Club is chock full of percussive and rhythmic exploration, as we play host to an Australian/Berliner drum master, a recent drummer arrival from Italy and a non-drummer of the highest order. Tony Buck may be best known for dripping aural bliss in The Necks, but his solo performances impart a much more urgent and multifaceted approach to percussive sound production that should be witnessed by all lovers of improv. Sam Karmel further explores the wonked out acidic techno vibes he often imposes upon fellow Bum Creek members, this time having to self-impose the weirder post-Plastikman realms usually facilitated by the other two Bum freaks. And recent Italian émigré and first-time Make It Up Clubber percussionist Carlo Canevali hands out sonic greeting cards to his new city of Melbourne, using sound investigation as a welcoming tradition alongside fellow Italian diaspora saxophonist Mirko Guerrini

Tuesday January 28th @ the Make It Up Club

This Tuesday is your last chance to aleatorically party on down for the Make It Up Club's sweet 16th birthday with our final four groups, representing three continents of sonic vocabulary, further fostering intercultural collaboration via communicatory spontaneous music creation and mutual construction of transcendent textures. Melbournian diasporic cellist Anthea Caddy returns to the MIUC stage on her yearly jaunt home from Berlin to the motherland for a clash of string and drum resonance with percussive force of nature Robbie Avenaim to round out a killer month of rarefied cross-cultural collaborations. It has also been two years since American modular maven Ben Vida blasted dense synthetic frequency clusters at the architecture of Bar Open, but in 2014 he's here to celebrate improvisation by affecting and reacting to the patch pin matrix, knob and joystick manipulations of Mathew Watson to co-create some layered electronic ecstasy. We also have a first time Make It Up Clubber in British vocalist Viv Corringham, a notional storyteller of lingual deconstruction and textural liberation, ably welcomed to the environs of Melbournian improv by local legend and ambassador-of-impromptu Dave Brown. And a cavalcade of free jazz firebrands corralled by living luminary Kris Wanders and featuring double bassist Slawek Janicki, saxophonist Brett Evans, drummer Damien Ellis & keyboardist Jude Russel, contextualise that the MIUC would probably be nonexistent were it not for Ornette's actions over 50 years ago.

Anthea Caddy (Cello) & Robbie Avenaim (Percussion)

Viv Corringham [UK] (Voice) & Dave Brown (Guitar, Objects)
Kris Wanders (Saxes), Slawek Janicki (Double Bass), Brett Evans (Saxes), Damien Ellis (Drums), Jude Russel (Korg)

Recent releases on Cipher Productions and Iron Lung:
DEAD BOOMERS 'Outcalls' C-11 (sic 79)
Two highlights from Dead Boomers' pre-2014 live set find their outlet in the studio and now onto this tape, detailed power electronics sermons which are the obvious follow-up to the acclaimed 'Pig In The Python' LP. That LP's ruminations on Australia's aging population tentacle into 'Outcalls' via fascinations with post-patriarchal feuds and pharmaceutical dispensation, provoking a grim terminality to Dead Boomers' familiar industrial layerings. Specially packaged in a painted rubberised material pouch with two inserts and a dogtag. Edition of 60 copies.
DEAD BOOMERS 'Arak' 7'' w/download (LUNGS-045)
The newest installment in the unofficial 2nd series of 2 song 7''s on ILR, the previous ones being PHT, DIÄT & COLUMN OF HEAVEN.
Australia's power duo, DEAD BOOMERS, are inspired by the social security draining, fully retired tumor of society commonly known as the baby boomer generation. Home-made instruments and a sage selection of power electronics are the basic tools used to deliver the destructive, calming crush heard within. Unnerving hard noise with punk attitude and approach that's eerily comforting like a visit from Jack Kevorkian on the last day. He has such a warm singing voice. Goodnight.
Recorded by Morgan McWaters. 300 copies ever.

Sabbatical Presents: Holdings 190114

Tuesday January 21st @ the Make It Up Club

The third week of Make It Up Club's 16th birthday celebrations is another commemoration of how truly fortuitous we are to live in an age of liberated music when it has become self-evident that all sounds are created equal, judged not by the content of their melodies but by the colour of their tone, united under the banner of improvisation. French chaotic system creator Jean-Philipppe Gross pits two notoriously bitter enemies, microphone and speaker cone, against one another to bear forth ravenously cannibalistic frequencies which could only be matched by the sheer brutality that is Melbourne's favourite post-Adornian thing-hitter, Sean Baxter. Two of our fine city's finest string-exciters, guitarist Alex Garsden and violinist Erkki Veltheim, demonstrate that zero point energy networks are common occurrences in improvisation, as they eloquently pluck concepts and abstractions from the quantum vacuum and convey them via amplified vibrations. Ben Byrne and Rosalind Hall invite you into their rarefied soundworld of descriptive tones and explicative textures, a reverberative democracy where all that is audible is appreciable and the deeper one listens the more likely one is to find a sound wave to alter one's existence. And a three-way noise rumble of prodigious proportions with pandemoniacal punishers Simon Karis, Pete Bramley and Peter James executing sadistic sonic senton bombs and abominable audial atomic drops on the tinnitus-ridden carcass of formalised music.

Tuesday January 14th @ the Make It Up Club

The second week of Make It Up Club's 16th birthday festivities dishes up a delicate degustation of abstracted sonic declarations for the discerning devotee of improvised music keen to explore the potentials within instrumental textures and their minutiae. New Zealander radio artist Sally McIntyre casts her receiver out into the imperceptibly omnipotent abyss of frequencies surrounding us, variously drawing in and transmitting out EVP of extinct birds, the void of defunct gallery spaces and the like, ably matched by the nihilistically nonentitative nullcore isms of Joel Stern. Four compressors and movers of air take advantage of the wondrous phenomenon known as resonance frequencies, in the cases of Casey Moir and Alice Hui-Sheng Chang to elicit timbres from their vocal folds, with Johan Moir the tubing of a trumpet and Nigel Brown the bass reed blocks of an accordion. The quixotically melodic minds behind Angel Eyes and Pikelet, namely Andrew Cowie and Evelyn Morris, come together to drift through the sonoverse on dreamy drones and ethereal tones in an audible cornucopia of pop-flavoured elation. And in a potential repeat of the most delightfully perplexing 30-minute conversation to take place at MIUC in 2013, nonrepresentational orators Jenny Barnes and Georgie Darvidis return to the Bar Open stage with free jazz wunderkinder James McLean and Alistair McLean providing the brotherly skittery-rhythm section.

Sally McIntyre [NZ] (FM transmitter & receivers, turntable, field recordings, bat detector & shortwave valve radio) & Joel Stern (Bits and Pieces of Nothing)

Melb/Syd collaborative effort, putting together short run cassette and digital releases.

Focus on noise/noised-up takes on the miscellaneous.

First release a split b/w JWPaton and Pare Ohm:

One side of tinnitus grandeur, obfuscated/repurposed electronica on the other.
Both bury a popular familiarity under layered misdirection: one for the romantics.

Upcoming early 2014 release from Orlando Furious (new project/persona from Ben Snaith of Caught Ship).

Keep tabs on all upcoming junk via the soundcloud.

Justin Fuller / Exiles From Clowntown / Encounter Group / Safeway Cafe - Jan 11th.

Exiles From Clowntown are a trio of three childhood friends spread across three states, only convening on rare occasions to make some noise. Exiles play a thoroughly unique kind of slop-rock that can be compared to Dead C and their ilk (think Xpressway records, Peter Jeffries, NEW ZEALAND). They’ve released three 7”s and have an LP slated for imminent release on US label Soft Abuse. Andrew played in 90’s rock group 3-Toed Sloth with Tom from feedtime, if that means anything to you. This will be their first show in Melbourne.

Joining them on this night will be duo Safeway Café (feat. Jarrod Zlatic of Fabulous Diamonds and Andrew Brochi of Repeairs), disjointed rock three-piece Encounter Group and, to close the night, the dismembered techno of Justin Fuller (member of Zond, Lakes, Tax, etc.).
