Tuesday April 2nd @ the Make It Up Club

This Tuesday at MIUC we attempt to construct a three-pronged audible hypercube to traverse throughout the 40 years of Australian freely improvised music. A rare solo venture into the far reaches of the sonoverse by Louis Burdett, one of the first and finest sonic voyagers to ever truly Make It Up on our soil; anything and everything perceptible by the ear is possible. Ren Walters and Brett Thompson meet to combine and musically discuss their first and second wave interpretations of pedal-enriched post-melodic free jazz guitar for what should be a truly stunning meeting of minds. And Kevin CK Lo divorces himself from the technical and psychological impedances of the bow, evoking from his violinparatus an entirely other but equally lyrical palette of tone colours with variously acquired implements.

Tuesday March 26th @ the Make It Up Club

The final instalment of MIUC for March 2013 sees us play host to a full night of guitar and guitarish duos with a frequent and much-loved visitor to our stage - improviser, historian, visual artist and Hawaiian shirt collector Mike Cooper. As the man himself is incredibly multi-faceted, transitioning effortlessly between trad jazz, noise, exotica, ambience and many places in between, four divergent Melbournian string-slingers will be making it up with him - Dean Roberts with his gorgeous post-folk delicacy, Rod Cooper with his textural post-blues (and surname congruence), Ian Wadley with his emotively shambolic melodiousness and Trevelyan Clay with his simultaneous dismissal and embrace of all things musical (and Hawaiian shirt congruence).

Spill & Dave Brown - Monkey - 24 Mar 2013

(forwarded from Dave Brown):

Just a quick note to let you know that I'll be playing with Berlin duo "Spill" at Monkey this Sunday evening. The duo is comprised of Tony Buck (The Necks) on drums and Magda Mayas on clavinet. We did a similar show last year while Tony and Magda were in town so I'm looking forward to hearing them play as a duo and then revisiting a trio collaboration.

In addition the evening will be extra festive in that it doubles as Tony's Melbourne birthday celebration, so come along and buy him a drink.

Light & Dark @ MUSIKUNST - 4:00 pm Saturday 30th March 2013

This month MUSIKUNST is exploring different aspects of the A/V spectrum with 2 very different approaches to sound.

THE OVERTONE ENSEMBLE
using a range of Just Intonation tuned instruments constructed by Tim Catlin, produce a haunting, ethereal sound. The instruments consist of an array of aluminium rods that are played acoustically by longitudinally stroking with rosined hands or gloves. The long sustaining nature of the rod's sound and the close interval tunings of the instruments allow players a sonic palette of intricate textures and a rich harmonic complexity. Other instruments such as handbells, cymbals, singing bowls, wineglasses, acoustic guitars, glockenspiels and sound sculptures are also bowed, percussed and activated to compliment the sounds of these instruments. Ensemble performers are: Tim Catlin, Dave Brown, Atticus Bastow and Ceallaigh Norman

TODD ANDERSON-KUNERT
creates doom/noise/drone-scapes through the use of live sample manipulation. The live audio signal is then used to distort, pixelate and animate a digitally projected still image into monochromatic oblivion.

School Girl Report Album Launch - Bella Union - 23 Mar 2013

In what will be something of a Camp A Low Hum reunion, School Girl Report launch their debut album on Rites Wild’s Heavy Lows label at the Bella Union Trades Hall on Saturday March 23rd, w/ support from the south’s finest: Circular Keys, Naked (TAS), Encounter Group, Legendary Hearts, Duck Duck Chop, Straylight and Nth Wheel DJs

SCHOOL GIRL REPORT are famous for updating their status in the middle of songs, showing an exhibition of the guitarist’s photos of the drummer sleeping, being the shape of hesitation rock to come, selling personalised cigarette lighter/fad lolly merch, a live hat-dancing video in China, being piled up on during their set at Camp A Low Hum and now for their post-physical album cover inscribed 'Success Is Dating School Girl Report.' The album inside is a collection of pieces recorded over the last 15 years by pre-school friends Samuel Miers and Daniel Oakman, with songs derived from love letters, arguments with brothers, stories written in Year 1, Batemans Bay and their subtly ruthless relationship with each other.

Tuesday March 19th @ the Make It Up Club

This week's edition of MIUC is an entire evening dedicated to the most heavily culturally encoded instrument known to humanity: the voice of the Homo Sapiens. Dutch sound poet/improviser Jaap Blonk demonstrates his virtuosically controlled yet delightfully puerile approach to the manipulation of lungs, throat, mouth and nose by rinnzekete bee bee nnz krr müüüü, ziiuu ennze ziiuu rinnzkrrmüüüü, Rrummpff tillff toooo? The motley septet of Pete Hyde, Christopher LG Hill, Angus Leslie, Jenny Barnes, Benjamin Harrison, Loretta Wilde and Zak Pidd will spontaneously create an anti-story conveyed in whispers, gurgles, screams, growls and whatever other 21st century narrative devices strike them at the time. And Gian Slater and Sophia Brous explore some of the more sonorous possibilities of the voice in a first-time duo that, if anything like either's solo output, should be devastatingly beautiful.

For this special outing PKE features - on drums Sean Baxter (Bucketrider), on geetar Mia Schoen (New Estate), on bass Pete Bramley (Penguins/Pop Singles), on electronics Peter James (Monolith), on saxophone the legendary Louis Burdett (too many references to mention but yes, he of that Whitlams song) all joining the esteemed hi-priest of Psych-noise, Mr Paul Kidney.

On this occasion Paul Kidney Experience are supporting Faspeedelay who, after trapsing all over the country, are launching their debut album in Melbourne.

Faspeedelay's album has been described as: -

"Seven tracks of sprawling experimentalism that ebbs and flows with unique consistency; you’ll find no lead instruments or bullshit within" - Time Off Magazine, Brisbane

"A series of atmospheric, chaotic instrumentals that defies easy categorisation" - Helter Smelter, Wollongong

Tuesday March 12th @ the Make It Up Club

This Tuesday at MIUC we present an evening chock-full of carefully deliberated electroacoustic abstraction. Magda Mayas returns with her masterful clavinet skills in collaboration with the deliciously delicate cello of ex-Melbournite-current-Berliner Anthea Caddy and hardcore Melbournist everythingcore-percussionist Sean Baxter, linking two of the healthiest improv scenes in the world for a true Mel/Ber hybrid performance. Matthias Schubert returns to Melbourne for the first time in two decades, showcasing his powerhouse approach to stunning solo saxophonic devastation with a frenetic barrage of hisses, screams, flutters, grunts and all those other textures possible from a woodwind instrument. And Thembi Soddell creates inevitably sublime hypothetical sonic environments out of a variety of disparaging field recordings and digital interventions, setting free lush ribbons of swirling sound that caress the body and stimulate the psyche.

Phillip Adams Balletlab presents

And All Things Return To Nature Tomorrow

Friday 15 – Saturday 23 March 2013

Southbank Theatre, The Lawler

TIX: www.mtc.com.au / 03 8688 0800

Choreographers: Phillip Adams and Brooke Stamp

Dancers: Phillip Adams, Brooke Stamp, Deanne Butterworth, Rennie McDougall and Matthew Day

Collaborators: Composer Professor Garth Paine, Architect Matthew Bird, Fashion & Design Susan Dimasi (Materialbyproduct), Lighting Design Robin Fox.

Professor Garth Paine is a leading Australian composer, academic and artist, specialising in sound with interactive technologies for installation, dance and theatre applications. Garthe is internationally regarded as an innovator in the field of interactivity in electronic music and media arts.

Garth is particulalrly fascinated with sound as an experimental medium, both in musical performance and as an exhibitable object. This has led to several interactive responsive environments where the inhabitant generates the sonic landscape through their presence and behaviour. Garth has composed several music scores for dance generated through video tracking of the choreography, and more recently using Bio-Sensing on the dancers body.

His immersive interactive environments have been exhibited in Australia, Europe, Japan, USA, Canada, UK, Hong Kong and New Zealand. Garth is currently Associate Professor in Sound Technologies at the University of Western Sydney and Associate Professor of Arts, Media and Engineering at the Arizona State University (USA).

Here is Garth's website with more info, bio, plus links to listen to his wondrous sounds: http://www.activatedspace.com/

And All Things Return To Nature, the first half, begins with concepts of sound frequency and vibrational transmission the manifestation of all life and matter, explored by Garth who creates a a kinetically charged field of sound and vibrational energy as a construct of 'being'. The second half, Tomorrow, is based around a visit to the Integraton, an acoustically perfect tabernacle in the Mojave Desert built on the site of an alleged alien abduction, using Garth to recreate a transformative sensory experience.

Thursday 7/3/13 - Stutter presents a night of duos featuring...

  • SPILL - TONY BUCK / MAGDA MAYAS (AU/DE)
  • ANTHEA CADDY / THEMBI SODDELL (AU/DE)
  • MARNEY MACLEOD / JUSTIN K FULLER (ZOND)
  • NO FUCKWITZ - ALEX CUFFE / DANIEL JENATSCH (AU/DE)
SPILL is the Berlin-based duo of Magda Mayas on piano and clavinet and Tony Buck on drums/percussion, formed in 2003. Releasing their 3rd album this year, Tony and Magda have been playing all over Europe, the USA, Australia and Lebanon.

ANTHEA CADDY / THEMBI SODDELL - Sampler and cello interact to generate acoustically opposing atmospheres. Interwoven with abstracted found sounds, instrument and environment merge to create a dynamic interplay between physical reality, sensory perception and psychological interpretation.

MARNEY MACLEOD / JUSTIN K FULLER (ZOND) - Guitarists Marney Macleod and Justin K Fuller create a terrifying strafing machine gun noise, finding and losing rhythms, then burying them under mountains of distortion and feedback.

NO FUCKWITZ has been described as people trying to play music who have never heard music before. The pop improv duet work with badly crafted hand made instruments and vocals.

Tuesday March 5th @ The Make It Up club

This edition of Make It Up Club sees some serious sonic densities dealt to those who dare to delve into the more brutal side of the improvised music oeuvre. Robin Fox and Marco Fusinato resurrect their rarified duo on one of the scarce occasions when both are actually in Melbourne at the same time; brains will surely melt, but they'll be thankful for the privilege. Melbourne's premier Testicle Candy tribute band Susie's Gone take the leap from lurking in the shadows of looped Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and Hawkwind to casting their own boogie-noise darkness with the help of the monolithic improvised heaviness of Hotel Wrecking City Traders. Garth Paine casts his Tempest to mangle beats into a glitch-ridden danceable detritus. And Fontaine mash together swirling loops of chaos with menacing brass, angular stabs of guitar and driving drums into a post-Miles angular rock-out to enrich both your consciousness and your neck muscles.
