Tuesday September 4th @ the Make It Up Club

This week, a focus on psychoacoustics generated both acoustically and electronically: Kraig Grady’s Clocks and Clouds project features hand built, tuned percussion instruments utilising the Javanese slendro harmonic series, where beating standing waves and phantom resonances invade the acoustic space of MIUC. Alice Hui-Sheng Chang‘s intoxicating vocal extensions collide with Ben Byrne’s latest forays into blank analogue data tape manipulations in real-time. And an uncompromising duo comprising Yuka Discobeans and Yuko Kono in their new collaboration in processed beats, voice and electric guitar.

Clocks and Clouds, featuring: Kraig Grady (meta-slendro vibraphone) and Terumi Narushima (meta-slendro pump organ)
Yuka Mikayama (voice, sampler and laptop) and Yuko Kono (guitar and effects)

$5/$10

New on Shame File Music mailorder:
Rod Cooper ''Magnets on Blank Tape'' LP Cooper creates rhythmic musique concrete by placing magnets of various strengths on or in the vicinity of blank tape; his instrument is electromagnetism as much as the tape itself. AU$35ppd

Francisco Lopez - ''Wind [Patagonia]'' CD Here Lopez states his main sound source and location up front in the album title. Indeed, the Patagonian winds are the 'instrument' here, as they interact with rock, sand, snow and ice. There are few who can match Lopez for presenting environmental recordings as a sonic tour de force, and this is no exception. Comes in diqipak with colour booklet. - AU$15ppd

Helmut Schäfer ''Thought Provoking III'' CD The final document from the electro-acoustic composer Helmut Schäfer who died in 2007. The Austrian artist spoke of his work as ''characterized by the use of very intense and direct musical language which powerfully describes his personal experience and reflections on society structures, the blindness of modern and informed masses and everyday functionalism in between civilization.'' That intensity of expression manifested itself through performances and collaborations that took Schäfer around the globe, including presentations at Documenta X and ARS Electronica both in 1997. For all of his tireless work, Schäfer's recording output is relatively small, focusing mostly on his collaborative work with noted musical extremist Zbigniew Karkowski.

Schäfer posited Thought Provoking as a radical shift from his brutalist electronic engineering to a spatialized, open-ended composition based on the muffled tones from an ad hoc instrument he built from salvaged church organ pipes and hair dryers. The first presentation of this work took place in his home town of Graz, Austria in 2003; the second was a collaboration with violinist Elisabeth Gmeiner in Vienna two years later; and the third & final performance occurred in 2006 with percussionist Will Guthrie and Gmiener at the St. Andre Church where he first presented it in Graz. After Schäfer's death, Guthrie reconstituted the rehearsal takes from that performance for this recording of Thought Provoking III, attempting to re-imagine the controlled energy of those sessions with Schäfer's aesthetic framework at the forefront. The bellowing hums from Schäfer's organ pipe and hair dryer contraction ebb and flow amidst intermittent percussive flourishes, subtle gong overtones, sustained violin trills, and fizzling electronic mark-making. On the second track of this disc, long-time friend Zbigniew Karkowski presents a smoldering electro-acoustic remix of Thought Provoking III as a fitting tribute to Schäfer. - AU$20ppd

Shane Fahey ''Twin Korg (Water Drip Code)'' CD - Recorded 1996-7, Fahey mans two Korg MS-20 synths triggered by a dripping tap and contact mics secured to the sink, for a double-barrelled analogue attack that ranges from industrial to noise to organic sound pieces. - AU10ppd

BACK IN STOCK - Felix Werder ''The Tempest'' CD - Four electronic/electroacoustic pieces (three from the 1970s, one from 1992) remastered from LPs long out of print. These compositions see Werder explore timbres and structures beyond the reach of his previous orchestral and chamber works. A significant chapter in the story of electronic music development in Australia, with liner notes by Warren Burt - AU$10ppd

Tuesday August 21st @ the Make It Up Club

This week: Joel Stern, Brisbane’s master of all things sonically visual, joins Tarquin Manek, Melbourne’s master of all things sonically absurd, in their new project, Baked Light. An exciting new collaboration between James Bowers, Gareth Thomson and Nic Lam exploring rock-driven, gritty free improvisation with an emphasis on texture and rhythmic layering. And the long overdue return of MV, with her signature focus on transforming microscopic sound into a sonic behemoth.

I have my first solo installation in quite some time opening this thursday night at West Space (see below for more details) - The installation will take a slightly different form than is stated in the West Space promotion
I of course can never make a decision and stick to it... ; )
but simply put it is an eight channel audio work for 50-60 3' tweeters (plus a few extra's) and a whole lot of cardboard!!

you will most likely struggle to hear the piece properly on the thursday night - I am sure you are all familiar with the whole problem of sound at openings - but if you are lurking around in the city come and have a cheap drink and distract me from fidgeting nervously in the corner

otherwise the show is up until September 15 - Gallery is open wednesday-friday 12-6 and saturday 12-5
it would be great if you got a chance to go and have a listen...

LEON
Leon is a bass duo consisting of Raphaël Ortis Louis Schild initiated
by the Insubordinations Netlabel and premiered for the label’s
Microfestival in January 2011. This meeting allowed to work and to lay
down several principles of improvisation as well as a better
understanding of the dynamics created by a two-bass playing. Fairly
quickly, the project has expanded and now becomes a trio with variable
geometry by inviting a drummer or a percussionist as different as
possible on each concert, in order to constantly renew the sound
language. Mechanical tearings or organic squeaks, the instrument is a
tool to instinctively express the sound whose form has to be
constantly re-carved. In this way, the fundamental aesthetic choices
are related to the basic instrumentation, namely two basses, and are
inspired by the meetings to expand the artistic discourse while
keeping free and spontaneous improvisation as a guideline.

http://www.ortis.ch/leon

dQtç
The Swiss noise improvisation trio dQtç (Lionel Friedli – drums /
Vincent Membrez – Minimoog / Antoine Läng – voice and electronics)
like to rush headlong into chaotic electronic rhythms and accidents to
extract sound events and turn them, once stubbornly repeated, into
patterns, sometimes through long psychedelic progressions, in order to
finally reveal a frame. Essentially built on an approach to
improvisation meant to be versatile and nervous, dQtç multiply the
opportunities to experiment with new modes, mostly asymmetric and
ramshackle to the limit of explosion, in search of an intensity of
speech that can only be found through an urgence of gesture.

DRY PROCESS
Dead Boomers and Wife

The idea of irrefutable truth is the bedrock of public discourse. It is used to form opinions and decide alignment within argument. But these fervently held beliefs -- often taken as unimpeachable gospel -- are built on subjective presentations of fact.

Taking the public furore surrounding the Lindy Chamberlin case as source material, Dry Process acknowledges the subjectivity at the heart of public truth and invites participation in the creation of yet another version through the window of the photocopier plate.

Workshops will be conducted over the course of the exhibition, creating new interpretations and perspectives. All are welcome to participate.

Dry Process is a collaboration between music groups Dead Boomers (Mark Groves and Leith Thomas) and Wife (Samaan Fieck and Eric Demetriou). The groups have created a series of sound works to accompany the installation. These will be released on cassette and digitally in the coming weeks.

COOPER COLLECTIVE DUOS @ MUSIKUNST ---- 4pm Saturday 25th August 2012

MUSIKUNST is happening on the last Saturday of every month in the basement of The Great Britain Hotel 447 Church St Richmond. Doors open at 4:00pm, performances start at 4:30pm and entry is $5 / $10
This month on Saturday 25th August are:

COOPER COLLECTIVE DUOS @ MUSIKUNST

Clinton Green (gramophone)
Evelyn Morris (drums)
Harriet K Militus (drums)
Michael Pulsford (drums)
Rod Cooper (electric guitars & gramophone)

The collective will perform duos with Rod Cooper. Drum kits will be arranged throughout the space. Cooper, having recently extended his noise work with two electric guitars with motorised strings added to his plant of handmade sound objects, will move between them instrumentally and with the odd blues song. There will also be a Gramophone duo with Clinton Green -- Cooper's concept was to invite other artists along, mainly drummers, who had expressed interest in playing with him. Cooper's long fascination with the work of drummers, due to the denial of a drum kit as a child, is the main reason for this particular focus. Whilst he regrets this disappointing aspect of his rural upbringing he maintains the rage through his unique form of sonic expressionism via the sonic objects he creates.

MUNEOMI SENJU - (Japan)

Cutting his teeth playing with Boredoms a.k.a. V∞redoms and PARA in Kansai, Muneomi Senju (drums, electronics) has since moved to Tokyo to continue exploring the possibilities of his instrument. As a solo player, Senju incorporates electronic triggers when playing, running them to sounds and sequences for a complex array of rhythm and texture. With a primal sensibility to his playing, the result is not unlike the conjoined bastard quadruplets of “tribal-fusion-techno-jazz” he's used to describe his music in the past.
As a collaborator, the list is long: Masami Akita (aka Merzbow), Arto Lindsay, UA, DJ Baku, Yukihiro Takahashi and Harry Hosono (YMO), Keigo Oyamada (aka Cornelius) and Otomo Yoshihide are just some of the artists he's been working with. He also continues to play drums in PARA (led by ex-Boredoms member Seiichi Yamamoto), Urichipangoon, Date Course Pentagon Royal Garden and Combopiano, as well as joining frequent one-off duo projects with Tatsuhisa Yamamoto and Berlin-based Iku Sakan.
