Undecisive God & Ernie Althoff dual CD launch - Conduit - 9 Jun 2012

Iceage Productions and Shame File Music presents a dual CD launch:

Undecisive God "RPMs 5,6,7" CD (Iceage Productions) - This series of compositions for prepared turntables continues with three pieces that feature unplugged acoustic turntables, empty turntables and a live multi-performer recording featuring 6 turntables. Rounded out with an abrasive live cut. The liners also contain Green's ruminations on the evolution of his turntable project (limited edition of 100 copies).

Ernie Althoff "Moggs Creek Picnic Ground" CD (Shame File Music) - Showcasing for the first time Althoff's field recording work, this single-take, unedited 70 minute recording (divided into 70x 1 minute tracks) was made by Althoff in 2004 at the titular picnic ground in the Otway Ranges, Western Victoria. It captures near-magical interactions between a plethora of birdlife against a backdrop of windblown eucalyptus trees (the bird calls of different species are detailed in Althoff's liner notes).  Moggs Creek is sublime listening as either ambient soundscape or for those interested in native bird song.

Both CDs will be launched on Saturday 9 June at Conduit Arts Initiative, 83 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy:

Undecisive God (Clinton Green)
Sean Baxter
Ernie Althoff
Em Vecue Aquieu

As well as playing solo material, Baxter and Green will also perfom a duo with Green playing broken/warped shards of Baxter's Solo Drum Improvisations LP.

From 8pm.  $5 entry. Facebook event.

CDs available on the night, from local independent stores including Missing Link/Collectors Corner & Polyester City, or order online from Shame File Music.  Shame File also stocks Undecisive God and Althoff's back catalogue (including free downloads), Baxter's Solo Drum Improvisations LP, & Em Vecue Aquieu's new Lightlike cassette.

JOHN NIXON - EPW: Colour-Music

John Nixon’s solo exhibition at Gertrude Contemporary depicts the relationship between his painting practice and his interest in music. Entitled EPW: Colour-Music, the exhibition in the main gallery space is a collection of 25 paintings on board which line the gallery walls. Forming part of the series entitled ‘Experimental Painting Workshop’ (EPW), this ongoing project was established by Nixon in the late 1970s. EPW serves as the title to distinguish different sets of formalist inquiries organized into various groups, the largest of which is EPW: POLYCHROME, made up of monochromatic paintings on board and canvas, and this grouping forms the central trajectory of the Nixon’s work.

The paintings on exhibition at Gertrude Contemporary, EPW: Colour-Music form part of EPW: POLYCHROME established in 2006. These works are pictorial scores that can be used to generate musical performances based on the organisational codes underpinning the series. This series of paintings is comprised of monochromatic geometric shapes set against a united background structure. The continuous structure operates like a grid or stave on which the shapes are plotted. Whilst presented as a series of paintings in their own right, EPW: Colour-Music also implies function outside the boundaries of pure painting, where abstract painting can conceptually expand to encompass wider spheres for activity and endeavour.

The exhibition also includes an installation in which Nixon has created coloured-coded blocks that correspond with the paintings and sit over the white notes of a keyboard. The presence of the keyboard in the exhibition space further compels a reading of the works in unison as the tools and language of minimalism, set against a visible graphic score for possible future preceedings.

Saturday 16 June, 4pm, halfway through the exhibition, there will be a concert at which Nixon’s paintings will be ‘performed’ by a group of musicians. Each painting contains a coded notational structure, which will form the basis of an interpretative score, that the musicians will play. The Gertrude Ensemble (a group of musicians that have been put together by musician Francis Plagne) will collaborate to play the work. The concert will be held in the main gallery space at 4pm sharp and there will be limited seating, so we recommend arriving early.

John Nixon was born in Sydney 1949. Lives in Briar Hill, Melbourne. First solo exhibition, Pinacotheca, Melbourne (1973). Selected by Germano Celant to represent Australia at Documenta 7, Kassel, Germany (1982). Winner of Clemenger Contemporary Art Award, Melbourne (1999). Recipient of Australia Council Fellowship Award (2001/02). Regular solo exhibitions at: Anna Schwartz Gallery, Melbourne; Sarah Cottier Gallery, Sydney; Goddard de Fiddes Gallery, Perth; Sue Crockford Gallery, Auckland; Hamish McKay Gallery, Wellington; Galerie Mark Muller, Zurich. Since 2000 has held large-scale exhibitions surveying aspects of his work from 1968-2005 at the following museums and galleries: Kunstmuseum Singen, Germany; Kunstmuseum Baselland, Basel, Switzerland; Stiftung für Konkrete Kunst, Reutlingen, Germany; Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne; the Art Gallery of Western Australia, Perth; and works from 2006-2007 TarraWarra Museum of Art, Healesville. His work is included in all major State Museum collections in Australia.

Felix Werder 24-2-1922 — 3-5-2012

A giant of Australian modernist music, Felix Werder, passed away last week at the age of 90.

Along with Margaret Sutherland and Dorian Le Gallienne, Werder was responsible for introducing and establishing a New Music scene in Melbourne in the 1950s, and continued to be a staunch supporter of New Music throughout his life, as a composer, teacher, mentor, and critic.

A concert of Werder's music was held in February to celebrate his 90th birthday, with the composer in attendance.

An obituary written by Warren Burt appeared today in The Age, where Werder was a music critic for many years.

Dronestock - Northcote Uniting Church - 2 Jun 2012

After an extremely long absence we have returned with our first show for 2012. A sequel to one of our most successful events!

DRONESTOCK!

The 2012 incarnation will match its predecessor on all fronts. This time around taking place within the acoustically savvy Northcote Uniting Church.

Featuring:

Grey Skies Blue / is an experimental documentary about protest, power and the possibility of change. Utilising interviews and imagery from the S11/Melbourne World Economic Forum demonstrations of 2000, Grey Skies Blue documents the experiences of a community gathered at a political demonstration. Featuring an original soundtrack performed live by Seth Rees (Amplifier Machine, The Spheres) and Guy Harris (The Spheres, Winternationale) the three screen documentary is an evocative encapsulation of a shared emotional experience - the crystallisation of a time, place and community of people who believed if but for a fleeting moment that “another world is possible”.

Em Vécue Aquieu / is the solo project from guitarist Sam Filmer. Creating ambient, spiritual sound, Sam builds an articulate spacial environment.
Experiencing his rare live shows, his sounds rise up with texture to gently fill the negative space between a nearby coffee grinder and a murmur from the back row. Chordal sound design together with heavily effected guitar, Em Vécue Aquieu explores experimentalism in classical structures without lending too often to silence. A persistent, lulling effect is translated, completely submersing everything in close proximity. This show also marks the official launch for his debut release "Lightlike".

Ollie Olsen / has amassed an incredible body of work in a variety of forms and projects: a chameleon-like artist delving into early punk/post-punk, industrial, with The Young Charlatans, Whirlywirld and NO, through to his electronic music, sound design, compositions for film and television and too many others to name.

Seaworthy / are a three piece collective that revolves around core member Cameron Webb as well as Sam Shinazzi and Greg Bird, exploring melodic and experimental approaches to the construction (and unravelling) of minimalist sound scapes from looped guitar, warm drones, piano, electronics and field recordings. The compositions often blur the lines of conventional categorisation with elements traditionally considered part of “indie” or “post” rock blended with processed musical and field recordings. Instruments and samples are looped through amps and effects pedals, giving the sound an organic feel concentrating on subtle shifts in melody, tone and texture to convey a sense of time and place.

Zac Keiller / seeks to discover new and unique sonic textures from one of the most overused and unimaginatively approached instruments in Western music: The guitar. The majority of his previous releases saw him working with ambient textures or electroacoustic improvisation. Whilst more recent efforts have seen him limiting the use of pedals, attempting to find a kind of transcendence through stark purity of tone, using the entire guitar, attempting to make it breathe with no smoothing out of the rough edges or slick over processing. The compositions vary and grow to tell stories and create mood, with an atmosphere in parts epic wall of sound, while at others minimal and sublime.

Monolith kick off the evening with their own brand of industrial space drone. Monolith conjur a unique atmosphere that is at both times, expansive yet contained. Taking inspiration from John Carpenter, Minit, Grey Wolves, Tangerine Dream, and Eliane Radigue to name a few, yet still managing to exist in a terrain of their own.

Saturday June 2nd.

This is an EARLY start show with doors opening and music beginning at 6PM.

$10.00. Northcote Uniting Church. 251 High St. Northcote.

Vocalist and percussionist of The Bumblebeez and the Sonar Radars, Kahlo, also works as a sound artist and composer, recently completing an Honours BA in Sound Installation.

Kahlo tours Australia extensively with the aformentioned acts as well as composing and performing live music to silent film classics. Previous live score performances have accompanied screenings at the Adelaide Film Festival and Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI), as well as regional centres.

As part of Mercury Cinema’s Silent Remasters 2011, Kahlo debuted his full length score to Wallace Worseley’s original silent film, “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”, a modern soundtrack and a winner.

As part of a larger proposed tour of cinematic venues in 2012, Kahlo will be performing his score live to this classic film work, melding electronic noise and an experimental computer-generated score.

That’s right, SoundBytes is back for our first post-Blip show, with a new night and a new venue and some new names who are lighting up the chipmusic scene.

First up for his first SoundBytes we have Slato, who was a regular at Mana Bar Brisbane’s “Pocket Music” nights. You may have seen his awesome performance at the recent open mic, and he’s bringing his gameboys back to Melbourne to get you moving.

Next up, rebelling against the game boys we have a double shot of Amiga epicness from two of Sydney’s finest. DF0:BAD who you may have previously seen performing as Vicious Cyclist will be a gabber kick to the face, while Australia’s favourite performing “wale”, Peaches along with her dad godinpants, will be performing amazing aquatic inspired jungle d&b for your listening pleasure.

Of course, we haven’t forgotten our local talent, with Maddest Kings Alive, Derris-Kharlan and dot.AY rounding out what is sure to be a stellar lineup. And, just for a little something extra special, with an AV setup like The Order has (trust us it’s amazing!), we’d be crazy not to have visuals too to round out the evening so for the first time at SoundBytes we have Abortifacient and iLKke (yeah the guy that makes our amazing posters!!) ensuring that you’re not only getting the audio chip experience but spectacular visuals too.

Odious Pegboard - Tape Projects - 6 May 2012

MAY 6th 2012 brings the fourth and FINAL instalment of ODIOUS PEGBOARD, a series of fortnightly Sunday afternoon free sound gigs at Tape Projects. So far this series has been has been enjoyed by all who have attended (or we like to tell ourselves that anyway). This weekend should see our continuation of collected sonic eclecticism so please come down and treat your ears for the final afternoon.

These shows drawn upon some of the most reclusive of Melbourne based sound makers, along side what looks to be the only melbourne performance by the UK's Simon Whetham. Most of those involved play very rarely, some leaving their bedrooms only to feed their cats or to collect more rubbish from the streets. Here is you chance to hear them make some sounds for your listening pleasure!

ODIOUS PEGBOARD #4 MAY 6th - Simon Whetham field recordings and resonances captured during his travels this year through usa, mexico, colombia, argentina, australia formed into an immersive and meditative composition. Jessie Scott+Alice Hui-Scheng Chang  live and screened, acoustic and projected, spontaneous and fragmented. Live and video bodies will redefine one another on alternate trajectories, the outcome being an objectification of live performance, and a live performance of an object. tarab carefully arranged sonic rubbish Tim Catlin expect other-worldly drones, ghost harmonics and ethereal glissandi....just don't count on hearing any conventional guitar sounds

Entry is FREE - starts 4pm ends 7pm (as we have four performances this week please come early!!)

Tape Projects 1/81 Bouverie St. Carlton Vic.

oh and please feel free to pass info on...to invite friends real or imaginary....
