The Dadacomputer was created as an experiment in long-distance collaboration, well Cardiff and Bristol, about 40 miles apart, separated by the Bristol Channel. The recordings were made in the Autumn of 1981. MAP and I had met about 6 months earlier in Bristol due to me putting an ad in a record shop looking to work with similar musicians quoting TG, Kraftwerk, Chrome etc as influences. We did a few recordings together but then I decided to move back to Cardiff where I had come from. I had spent 3 years in Bristol struggling to do a philosophy degree all the while getting into improvised and electronic music and collaborating with various Bristol musicians. So when I went back we wrote a lot to each other, both releasing solo music on our own cassette labels MAPtapes and Quick Stab Music Products. Then we got going on The Dadacomputer. I created the initial backings using a Korg MS20, various Akai reel to reel machines, which I did half speed and double speed manipulation with, I also used a Dr. Rhythm drum machine and various vinyl ie: Stingray (a children's marionette television show, created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson from 1964–65). Once these original backings (which to my knowledge no longer exist) were completed I posted them to MAP and he then added all the overdubs using a double cassette machine. Guitar, vocals, keyboards (Casiotone and Stylophone) and sawing wood on one track. Once this was done we both released the finished recording on our respective cassette labels. The Dadacomputer title came from me saying in a letter "What shall we call it, something crazy like dadacomputer maybe", and MAP saying "YES that will do great".

Tuesday December 18th @ the Make It Up Club

This week at Make It Up Club: THE END (of this year's programming) and, if you believe those Nibiruists, one of your last chances to hear some killer improvised sounds before Melbourne is reduced to a smoldering wasteland. Accordingly, we've tried to cover many of our favourite facets of improvised music! Angus Leslie and Jenny Barnes tear away at the cultural implications of the masculine and feminine voice, respectively, to lay bare the decontextualised sonics of the human vocal cords - aided ably by bassist James Pankhurst as something-resembling-a-rhythm-section-to-hold-it-all-together. Two of our fine city's finest and well-defined guitar manipulators, Dave Brown and Gearoid Brinn, will be there as well to ensure you contemplate life, the sonoverse and everything before it all ends - aided, hindered and complicated by percussionist/stuff-hitter Sean Baxter as something-resembling-a-rhythm-section-to-ensure-nothing-crystallises-too-fully. And just in case your existential angst becomes overwhelming, FUCKED are always happy to lend a hand by smacking all conscious thought out of your head with Robbie Avenaim's hyperspeed blastbeats, dematerialising them with Lloyd Honeybrook's dense feedback frequencies and having Nik Kennedy scream at them as they rot on the floor, distracting and lulling you out of existence by means of noisecore.

Sean Baxter (Percussion), Gearoid Brinn (Guitar) & Dave Brown (Guitar)
Angus Leslie (Voice), James Pankhurst (Bass) & Jenny Barnes (Voice)
FUCKED feat. Robbie Avenaim (Hellish Crossfire On Wooden Coffins), Nik Kennedy (Blastgargling) and Lloyd Honeybrook (Howls of the Feedbax)

Tuesday December 11th @ the Make It Up Club

This week's edition of Make It Up Club is aimed at preparing listeners for the oncoming apocalypse/holiday season with a dose of sheer unadulterated sonic brutality. Young upstarts Fjorn Butler and Cooper Bowman duel it out in analog, mangling their magnetic source material into sonic detritus via electro-interventionist means before smashing it into the other's signal. Jael Edwards' grim(m) dystopian Nothinghunger project is the sound of bone crunching under boot, everything red, then everything black, the audial essence of pure nihilist misanthropy and all those other words David Keenan would use to describe Kristian Vikernes. But fret not, for JK Fuller will be present to ensure that proceedings are still firmly in hedonist party mode with his masterful mastery of conducting and controlling the motion of charged electrons through metal wiring.

Audiovisual doom, noise and drone.

Zac Keiller seeks to discover new and unique sonic textures from one of the most overused and unimaginatively approached instruments in Western music: The guitar. The majority of his previous releases saw him working with ambient textures or electroacoustic improvisation. Whilst more recent efforts have seen him limiting the use of pedals, attempting to find a kind of transcendence through stark purity of tone, using the entire guitar, attempting to make it breathe with no smoothing out of the rough edges or slick over processing. The compositions vary and grow to tell stories and create mood, with an atmosphere in parts epic wall of sound, while at others minimal and sublime.

Tuesday December 4th @ the Make It Up Club

This week at Make It Up Club local sonic genius/visual genius Nathan Gray curates his vision of Cornelius Cardew's Scratch Orchestra, defined by Cardew in their draft constitution as ''a large number of enthusiasts pooling their resources (not primarily material resources) and assembling for action (music-making, performance, edification).'' Basically what this means is Gray has been kind enough to gather a heap of Melbourne's amazingest sonic/visual artists to read off some paper - in this particular instance James Tenney's Swell 1 & 2 - and perform and allow you to bask in the glory that is improvised music (etc.)

Retro Futurism

Retro Futurism airs Fridays midnight - 2am on Melbourne's Triple R 102.7FM during November 2012.

Retro Futurism looks backward to look forward, celebrating musical modernists working on the edges of composition, improvisation, quantisation, from Schoenberg to Sun Ra, from Darmstadt to Detroit, from vocoder to VST, from yesterday to tomorrow...

From the harmonic revolutions of Vienna, the Impressionist mists of Paris, through the serial, aleatoric, stochastic, concrete, electro-acoustic, improvisation and electronic experiments made throughout the twentieth and twenty first centuries, as well as songs about spaceships, robots and the cosmos.

Retro Futurism is future music, regardless of heritage.

I will begin adding these items to the Shame File catalogue over the coming weeks at full retail prices, so get in quick to take advantage of the special prices listed in this document (thus saving me the effort of creating catalogue entries for them!).  Some titles are selling fast, so enquire first as to availability.

New on the Shame File Music mailorder catalogue:

Warren Burt "The Animation of Lists and the Archytan Transpositions" 2CD - Absolutely astounding album of other-worldly music created with Burt's self-built just-intonation tuning forks. The alunimium forks are tuned to a 19 note scale derived from ancient modes created by Ptolemy. The overtones and harmonics created by the ringing tones of these forks ring around your room, completely enveloping you in their soundworld. This is perhaps Burt's most astounding recorded acheivement, and given his massive output, that gives you an idea just how special this is. Finally back in stock, but selling fast.

Circle Ov Thee "Grey" CDR - Originally released on limited edition cassette in 1998, this dark lo-fi subterranean noise statement from Queensland is a good representation of noise cassettes from this time. With variations in texture, intensity and dynamics, the shorter track lengths make for more interesting listening than some more contemporary harsh noise.
Coming up live:

This week's instalment of MIUC sees us paying (dis)respect to the musical genre that introduced pure improvisation to most of the Western world. Yoann Durant demolishes the space within his saxophone with the physicality of his breath - and does so with the upmost delicacy/precision and reckless brutality in the same breath. Prepare for sublime free jazz catharsis as the quintet of Brett Evans, Tom Fryer, Rory Brown, Ali Watts and Damien Ellis launch us into the sonoverse on an ecstatic ship powered by pure distilled skronk. And a welcome addition to any edition of MIUC: brilliantly staunch improviser Christopher Young will be filling in audiences on the latest results of the continued interrogation of his reed instruments.

Keith Fullerton Whitman - Workers Club - 25 Nov 2012

Keith Fullerton Whitman, the enigmatic maestro of modular synthesis returns to Australia this November, playing on an incredible bill at the Workers club in Melbourne!  Over the past decade Mr.Whitman has shape-shifted through the outer reaches of audio, concocting a deeply personal and provocative audio maze that has most recently ventured into complex voltage controlled synthesis. He has recorded for influential electronic labels such as Kranky and Editions Mego and the word on the street is that his recent live shows have been mindblowing! Also on the bill is a rare duo performance from long time sparring partners Oren Ambarchi & Robbie Avenaim, guitar noise maestro Marco Fusinato's last Oz show before heading to the USA for 5 months, and a rare Melbourne appearance from NZ's Dean Roberts. Beginning with the post punk rock trio Thela and moving through White Winged Moth and into his solo recordings, Dean Roberts has marked himself as a guitarist and songwriter of unique talents - this is an amazing bill & clearly an event not to be missed!

Battle of the One Man Bands - Gasometer - 6 Dec 2012

(forwarded from Rod Cooper)

Kynan Tan curates @ MUSIKUNST - 4pm Sat 24th Nov 2012

Kynan Tan presents two varied performances
displaying the broad range of his work.

Kynan Tan performs "rætina" - solo audio-visual performance
Material from Kynan's album on the listen/hear collective label, melting style boundaries in a mix of glitch, synthesised spectral textures and processed rhodes and guitar samples. Combined with a system for directly converting sound into video - this computer music performance becomes an immersive, sensory spectacle.

"Té" - Andrew Brooks [saxophone]
& Kynan Tan [computer]

+ Alice Hui-Sheng Chang [voice]
Improvised electroacoustic textures, sound mass and voice

Kynan's collaboration with saxophonist Andrew Brooks began while both were living in Berlin, where they started discussing sound and methods of group improvisation. The group has performed in Germany and Australia, collaborating with artists such as Philip Zoubek, Joe Talia, Finn Ryan and James Rushford. Collectively each collaboration draws parallels between electronic and acoustic sound, each taking part in cacophonous noise, heavy drones and contemplative tones.

On this evening Té will be collaborating with Alice Hui-Sheng Chang, who's work focus solely on developing extended vocal technique as a means for improvisation and communication. Her vocal explorations include sound from varying tension of physical vocal parts, driving air into alternative passages and vibration of calls and breath. The results of these explorations create a delicate world of primal and vulnerable soundscapes.

True Strength - Conduit Arts - 23 Nov 2012

True Strength + Carolyn Connors + Matthias Schack-Arnott @ Conduit Arts Nov 23rd
8.00PM - MATTHIAS SCHACK-ARNOTT (solo percussion)
Matthias Schack-Arnott is a new music specialist who regularly performs across Australia and internationally. Matthias' improvisational language combines the precision of classical percussion with experimental aesthetics. For this rare solo set, Matthias uses ruined tubular bells, granite tiles, sheet metal and gongs to create a new work exploring corrosion and decay.

8.45PM - CAROLYN CONNORS (solo voice)
Carolyn Connors is one of Melbourne's absolute treasures.
She's an experimental and improvising singer, a composer and a theatre maker.
"...remarkable Carolyn Connors...Material Mouth is one of those deeply satisfying works which leave you ruminating for hours afterwards... (one) of Australia's most interesting performance artists" Alison Croggin,

Featuring Alexander Garsden (guitar) and Ida Duelund Hansen (voice, double bass). Their music draws on the languages of British and American revivalist folk from the last century, manifested in longer form compositions and textures taken from Baroque, Mid-Late Twentieth Century Classical and Experimental Music.
