Tuesday November 1st @ the Make It Up Club

The venerable David Tolley (a legend of Melbourne improvisation for over 40 years), reconvenes a number of collaborations, including THE OTHER and CONNECTIONS for this week's concert at MIUC. Over two sets, the 10-piece ensemble will perform various combinations from duos to tentets of rarefied “instant composition.” The concert also features the reprise of CONNECTIONS, a trio featuring David with collaborators, Dur-é Dara and Phil Treloar after a 22 year hiatus. Needless to say, THE OTHER boasts some of the most accomplished improvisers from the fields of jazz and abstraction.

  • THE OTHER, featuring:
  • Carolyn Connors (voice and ukelele)
  • Dur-é Dara (percussion)
  • Tom Fryer (guitars)
  • Tony Hicks (wind instruments)
  • Anita Hustas (bass violin)
  • Adrian Sherriff (trombone and shakuhachi)
  • David Tolley (laptop and electronics)
  • Phil Treloar (marimba)
  • Ted Vining (drumkit)
  • Ren Walters (guitars)

Visible Sessions - Curve Bar - 25 Nov 2011

On November 25th we will be presenting Visible Sessions: Adventures in Sound, which has seen two groups of experimental artists team up with two of Melbourne’s finest “world” music artists: Indian Bansuri player Vinod Prassana and Tibetan Drangyen player Tenzing Yeshi. The result is two unique and one-off performances that will be presented for the first time on November 25th. The day will showcase an infusion of traditional and contemporary styles interweaved with new and old technologies, with an overarching sound of the ancient East.

DIY instrument and sound makers Rowan McNaught & Sam Szoke-Burke are joining forces with Indian Bansuri maestro Vinod Prassana for an ecletic sound scape adventure.
Lavender vs. Rose & Tenzing Yeshi
Regular experimental collaborators Lavender vs. Rose are opening the doors to their technical wonderland, incorporating the sound of the traditional Tibetan stringed instrument the Drangyen played by musician Tenzing Yeshi.

Tuesday October 18th @ the Make It Up Club

This week, a special conduction performance devised by Australian expat, Jasmine Guffond (out from Berlin for some Melbourne Festival action). The piece uses brass and winds to generate other-worldy timbres and frequencies, in a randomised, oscillating, aleatoric improv. Sydney avant voice performer, Tony Osborne returns for a set of extended voice and electronic processing. And Brisbane's Oscill_Ether, with extrapolated electronics, incorporating the traditions of the tabletop and the synth, with contemporary sonic abstractions.

  • Jasmine Guffond (Berlin) (conduction with horns)
  • Tony Osborne (Syd) (acoustic and electric voice)

Jack Ellitt - Sound Constructions

Jack Ellitt Sound Constructions (free download or CDR)
One of the most startling discoveries unearthed by Shame File Music’s landmark 2007 release Artefacts of Australian experimental music: 1930-1973 was undoubtedly the excerpt from Ellitt’s “Journey #1”, dated from the early 1930s. Ellitt’s (pictured here working with tape recorders in 1998) astounding proto-musique concrete work was previously known to only a handful of researchers, but Artefacts awoke a keen interest in this forgotten electronic music pioneer. Sound Constructions collects together all known Ellitt recordings (including the never-before-heard complete version of “Journey #1), spanning a period of 57 years, and integrates the steaming/downloadable tracks into an essay on Ellitt’s work and life written by Artefacts compiler and music historian, Clinton Green. This format is an attempt by Shame File Music to arrive at a new kind of online release that incorporates background information and analysis of the artist and his work to provide some context to Ellitt’s astounding yet little-known music. Stream/download Sound Constructions or purchase the CDR version from

Paul Kidney Experience CD launch - Irene's Warehouse - 15 Oct 2011

(forwarded from Neumusak):
One saturday morning in August this year the 10 members of Paul Kidney Experience and Slocombe's Pussy combined and converged on The Tote in daylight hours! During this time they recorded through the venue's brand new 24 track digital system.

The lab at Magik Crowbar Produktionz PTY LTD is excited to announce the newest cosmic batch of complete and utter shit. These are the most recent jams, from da tapes straight to your ears, some of the latest sonic nihilism...

MC045 JUNK SICK "Rising Damp" cs (60x)
Concussed loops, conflicting mayhem, chopped up oddities - short and long, some as big as your head. Cooper Bowman and Tom Miller bump out another ~heavy~ tape after launching their first release, split 12'' lathe with legendary Japanese outfit CCCC. Heavy doses of 'Psychic Driving Tapes' and 'KFC City 3099' were consumed prior these recordings. Split with Altered States Tapes *

MC056 SEAN BAXTER + MARCO FUSINATO "Stutter 180810" cdr (30x Reissue)
After a nice evening BBQ, Sean decided to do the dishes and Marco had already started on the pots and pans. An interesting and complex scale of sound from electronic incinerator noise to percussive junk. Amazing live set captured and worth a listen. Twenty of these bad boys will be going overseas with Baxter in the near future.

MC060 SLEEPING BAG FULL OF BOYS "Sacks Full" cs (40x)
Waking up in a daze, derelict piles of trash swamp the floor, you make a path kicking the bottles over to the side and head to the bathroom still brooding with a repetitive bumping hangover. The stench of substance abuse is in the air. Bewildered to what happened the night before. You try and clean what's left of yourself up and head straight back to your room to avoid any social interaction. When you see a 90210 sleeping bag filled with objects unknown in the corner of your room. Split with Altered States Tapes *

MC0666 V/A "Atomic High" cdr (10x)
A CD-R compilation created for the State Library of Victoria and Dr. Nylstoch's Archives in the Venting Gallery vault. Selected from the more sinister lo-fi end of the collection including harsh, abstract and new age works from Bile Worship, Psychward, Trichotillomania, Scissor, Mshing and Junk Sick. All tracks previously released on labels, primarily Magik Crowbar and also Altered States Tapes and Trapdoor Tapes.

* Coopers notes available here -

From the murky slime filled sewer, coming soon...
ALWAYS "Daddy vs. Son" cs
SPASMOSLOP "Non-Monoglot" cdr + art

Tuesday October 4th @ the Make It Up Club

This week, MIUC boasts some perverse excursions into the realms of pop anti-aesthetics. From Shane Van Den Akker, the vocal massacre artist of such projects as Cult of the Placenta-Head and Disrupture is the new solo project, Donkey Mothers of Arse. Working through different forms of voice sound, ranging from acapella to electronic processing, this project sees the exploration of new concepts as they relate to an audience-centric context. Electronic mavericks, Miles Brown and Matthew Brown (from such post-punk-pop-projects as the Night Terrors and ZOND!), promise an orgy of analogue fecundity realised via theremin and synth—plugging things in where they shouldn't be plugged. And Mad Nanna, a group of luminaries from Melbourne's postcore scene, fusing a wealth of experimental musical practice with the aesthetics of no-fi outsider pop for an exclusive improv excursion amidst an active calendar of more “conventional” local appearances.

  • Donkey Mothers of Arse, AKA: Shane Van Den Akker (voice)
  • Miles Brown (theremin) and Matthew Brown (synthesiser)
  • Mad Nanna, featuring: Samaan Fieck (no), Ian Wadley (fi), Patrick O'Brien (anti) and Michael Zulicki (music)
