We, The Masters (installation) - City Square 21 Jul - 7 Aug 2011

(forwarded from David Chesworth):
---------------------
Sonia Leber and David Chesworth
We, The Masters

Runs 5pm to 10pm from 21 July to 7 August
City Square Swanston Street, Melbourne

Sonia Leber and David Chesworth have recorded hundreds of intimate vocalisations between people and their animals for a new sound-based installation. Part of a series of new works curated by ACCA for the City Square, Leber and Chesworth’s We, The Masters captures the inventive and at times hilarious things we say to our pets.

Leber and Chesworth have used raw material from everyday life – parks, veterinary clinics, animal training schools, farms and zoos - to capture the highly personal way people talk to their animals. We, The Masters captures the various tones, melodies and patterns of speech used by owners when communicating with their pets, often formed through repetition and habit. With the sounds of the animals edited out, the voices appear to be calling out directly, and commanding, cajoling and encouraging, the passersby.

Rows of bunting are suspended across the footpath along Swanston Street, like a text-based scrabble of possible words and part-words, highlighting the inventive voice-play we can hear in the soundscape.

We, The Masters shows alongside a new work by Laresa Kosloff, Office Skate, which captures people undertaking work and leisure activities within the built environment.

Roil at Undue Noise Wed 27th July Bendigo

Old Fire Station, View St, Bendigo
Wed July 27, 8pm, $10
supported by Planet Caravan (improv) and Jacques Soddell (laptop) - details below

ROIL is a collaboration between pianist Chris Abrahams (well known foe his work with The Necks), bassist Mike Majkowski, and drummer James Waples. Formed in 2007, this Sydney-based trio has been developing their own approach to jazz improvisation. There is a controlled elegance to Roil’s music — not that this precludes the energetic. The music has an eddying quality that moves between group utterance and multi–stranded counterpoint, a weaving of textures that coagulate to form unified phrases before dispersing once more into the churning invention…

“A beautifully weighted trio, full of delicacy, mesmerizing accumulations of detail and engulfing power ” (John Clare)
“…this essay in sound challenges preconceptions…” (Roger Mitchell)
“…bright piano, rich bass and bass drum packing a mighty punch.” (John Shand)

Planet Caravan - local improv group with Justin Bull (guitar plus), Mathew Underwood (sax) Simon Howard (erdhu plus) Pat Underwood (vibes, hammond), Paul Fletcher (whatever) and Pete Byrne (drums)

Jacques Soddell - a live version of new water based piece, using Cedric Peyronnet's sample of the Taurion River) about to be released on mini-cd in France

Undecisive God "RPMs 3-4" CD

Clinton Green’s Undecisive God project has been a mainstay of Australian experimental music since the 1990s. Initially focussed upon guitars, Green’s current focus is upon prepared turntables as dynamic generators of random sound and percussive patterns.

Undecisive God's new CD RPMs 3-4 is the third installment in a series of releases documenting variations on a compositional structure Green designed for turntable interaction.

Available now from Shame File Music. Listen to a track from the CD online here.

Tuesday July 5th @ the Make It Up Club

Three very exploratory performances this edition including some unusual collaborations. From Mexico City, Jorge Ramirez has been blowing away Australian audiences this week with his complex and precise musique concrete style laptop performances, and for his MIUC show is joined by Melbourne's master of post-hardcore vocal growls, Pete Hyde (Whitehorse, CTV, Occult Blood, etc). Kevin CK Lo makes his solo debut after a searing set with Knowself in June, promising multi-instrumental abstraction. And, another absurdly genius concept from Shane Van Den Akker, this time comprising a trio of experimental mischief makers (from Gallactagogue and GoGenreEverything, no less) utilising mobile phones as the sonic interface, in a collaboration performed both remotely and in situ

Jorge Ramirez (Mexico) (laptop) and Pete Hyde (voice)
