HandMadeMusic Booteak - Bus Gallery - 3 May 2011

HandMadeMusic Booteak >> Bus Gallery Tues 3rd May from 7:30pm $5/7

To boot up the forthcoming Hand Made Music festival we’re inviting you to a booteak kick-starter deep underground at the Bus Gallery on Tues. 3rd of May from 7:30 - 10:30pm as part of their Unstructured multi-artist exhibition.

The evening will be a chance for the experimental instrument scene to come together, show our works, jam, chat and skill-share in a truly unstructured way in an intimate setting. Circuit bent TVs and toys, kinetic noise sculptures, cybernetic circuits, motors, rotors, resonators and more.

Bus Gallery is in the basement level of Donkey Wheel House at 673 Bourke Street, near Spencer St. station.

The Hand Made Music festival is being launched by Rod Cooper, John Jacobs and Ben Kolaitis as a collective platform for artists to celebrate and encourage the creation of handmade experimental sound devices.

Hmm is for makers by makers, featuring original artists and their original instruments, with performance, exhibition and workshop strands.

SUNDAY MAY 01, 2011. Doors from 8.00pm

MoHa! (Norway)

$12.00 on the door

The Toff, Level 2, Curtin House, 252 Swanston Street, Melbourne

The Wire recently cited MoHa! as an "extreme hybrid between free improv, gutter electronics and darkwave scuzz" and they have been proclaimed as simply, "the future of Norwegian rock".

MoHa! is A.S.H on guitar/keyboard and M.J.O on drums/SC3 and this is their first Australian appearance.

Also appearing is Horacio Pollard, a Berlin/London based musician working with mind altering obscure noise creations. And collaborated with many artists including Anla Courtis, Anal Garden, Bbblood, Blue Sabbath Black Fiji, DJ Scotch Egg, Moha!, Ove Naxx, Pokemachine, Torturing Nurse & more. Live shows are loud, destructive and thoroughly entertaining!

Local weirdos Bum Creek round off this killer bill promising a triumphant lurching mess of synth squiggles, kraut percussion and vocal gibberish.

Battlesnake - Builders Arms - 7 May 2011

Come to the Builders Arms on Saturday May 7th for the giveaway of the limited-edition 5-track EP 'A Dead Giveaway', featuring unreleased tracks from improvising weirdos Battlesnake, Vodnik, Mad Nanna and Rod Cooper. There's only 20 copies in existence, it'll only be availableat the gig, and they'll go to the first 20 payers, so get in early! Headliners Battlesnake are happy to return to the Builders Arms for a night of hollering joyful destruction and party-starters. Just on the cusp of finishing their second album, 'Your Life Is On Fire', produced by the ubersonic Casey Rice, too! Come and watch things fly around the room while the walls shake gently.

They're joined by Vodnik, who infect the free-rock vibe with a dose of sci-fi dub weirdness; free-freak-folk-rockers Mad Nanna - in their last show before departing for a tour of New Zealand, and genius instrument maker Rodney John Cooper, playing 'original blues compositions'on a self-made instrument he calls the Membragurdy.

Undecisive God - new release and upcoming shows

Undecisive God "Finnegans Wake" mini CD - 2010 was the year I read James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake. Questions about its ‘unreadability’ aside, I discovered a strange rhythm and musicality in the text. I found that this along with its sheer otherworldliness began to influence the way I thought (not as in ‘thought about things’, but the mechanics of thinking). And in particular, the way I listened. The book is mysterious and unknowable, so it seemed impossible to articulate its meaning and/or value by conventional methods. This CD is an attempt to represent what Finnegans Wake means to me through sound rather than words. Available on mini CDR from Shame File Music for AU$7ppd or trade, or free download.

Upcoming gigs:

Wednesday 27 April 2011, 9pm

Robbie Avenaim, Undecisive God, Dick Threats, Angel Eyes

Wizard Oz tape launch - Grace Darling - 1 May 2011

(forwarded from Wizard Oz):

Wizard Oz are launching a new cassette at the Grace Darling on May 1 and thought we'd tell you about it. The details look like this A night of hallucinatory lofi noise pop including the hypnotic tape experiments of Wizard Oz, the transcendent sonics of Grand Prismatic, the enduring charm of Popolice, and the magical sounds of The Clits. All set against the backdrop of Wizard Oz’s new mystic lightshow. Wow.

Flower Days “…mixes chanting, arcade noises, lo-fi recording, pulsing synth and melodically cavernous vocals into a fresh sound all its own” (their bated breath) and can be yours for the meager price of $5 on the night. (or for free anytime here: DOWNLOADDOWNLOADDOWNLOAD) $8 at the door.

Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet - Anytime Place - 1 May 2011

(forwarded from Zac Keiler):
Dreamland Recordings Presents:

On the 40th
anniversary of its premiere, Barnaby Oliver and Steph Brett, in association with Dreamland Recordings, present an audacious reimagining of Gavin Bryars' groundbreaking 1971 composition Jesus Blood Never Failed Me Yet.

The piece is built around the singing of an anonymous homeless man recorded by Bryars in London's East End. The man's simple but affecting song is enriched with a simple, though gradually evolving, orchestral accompaniment.

Expanding the composer's original vision, a cast of over 20 musicians from Melbourne's myriad musical subcultures join forces to create a unique performance event. An 'in the round' staging intermingles performers and audience to create an immersive experience that blurs the boundary between audience and performer. Whilst the original 1971 performance lasted 25 minutes this performance will unfold over an epic 120 minutes.

A spectacular visual counterpoint is provided by pioneering lightshow artist Hugh McSpedden, famous for his visual projections since the 1960s.

Sunday, May 1 • 8:00pm - 10:00pm
Anytime Place, 20 Ovens St. Brunswick
20 Ovens Street, Brunswick. $10.00.

Tuesday April 19th @ the Make It Up Club

Tonight at the MIUC, we make connections between the complex improvisatory potential and extreme rhythmic variations inherent in two discrete genres. In Melbourne this fortnight, for a swathe of punk shows, New Zealand's answer to Sabot and No Means No, Mr Sterile Assembly, return for a hyper, free-math-rock, punk-complexity duo onslaught of fractured beats and intense timbres—their only complete improv show of the tour. And, Northcote legend, and Melbourne's finest, Timothy Pledger also returns, with a large group, Product, concentrating on post-free-loft-soul featuring many of this town's stalwarts of the free jazz scene, with some exciting new voices, too.

Kieran Monaghan (drumkit) Chrissie Butler (electric bass guitar) (NZ).
Tim Pledger's Product, featuring: Tim Pledger (bass clarinet and soprano saxophone), Christopher Young (bass clarinet and flute), Ali Watts (contra bass), Adam Spiegel (contra bass), Chris Lewis (drumkit), Daniel Bates (drumkit), Tom Fryer (electric guitar)

static:erratic - Quake Raiser

(forwarded from Lachlan Gale):

Two Melbournites currently residing in Japan, John Box (Pissbolt, Dad They Broke Me) and Lachlan Gale (Microvom) have joined creative forces to raise some funds for the devistated Tohoku region. The result is 'static:erratic', and their first release 'Quake Raiser' is now available for download from John and Lachlan have combined two solo tracks each and have also worked collaboratively via the net for their first joint effort entitled 'Sweet'. Each track on Quake Raiser is unique but for the most part draws on sounds borrowed and manipulated from the typical Japanese urban or rural environment. Tuesday April 12th @ the Make It Up Club

Tonight, the MIUC features the plucked and blown, with two sublime duos transgressing the traditions of bebop and non-idiomatic improv, embracing the outsider, the absurd, and the bruitagist instincts of anti-music. Sonic dadaists, David Palliser and Alexis Ensor (the Charles Ives Singers and the Donkey's Tail), improvise some collapsed rarities ranging from the demented to the delicate. And the 21st century's contemporalised reincarnation of Bailey/Parker, Gearoid Brinn and Lloyd Honeybrook map the future of 1970s non-idiomatic improvisation, launching it into the stratosphere of sonic possibilities.

David Palliser (clarinet with loops and voice) and Alexis Ensor (monostring cigarbox, horns and voice)

Golden Fur at Castlemaine State Festival

Saturday 9th April 4pm

ICU, 1 Halford St Castlemaine

tickets $15 at door

info 0421786595,

Punctum and Undue Noise are thrilled to give you an opportunity to experience (or re-visit) recent highlights from this innovative chamber music group. Formed in 2007, Golden Fur engage with contemporary classical music in youthfully iconoclastic style, adding volume, volatility and theatricality by means of built instruments, electronics, amplification and computers. Focusing on more obscure contemporary and 20th Century music, this trio has performed at many major Festivals and events including Melbourne International Arts Festivl and Chamber Music Australia, and has just concluded its second season of exciting new works by young Australian composers.

The trio (Samuel Dunscombe (clarinet/laptop), Judith Hamann (cello), James Rushford (keyboards/viola)) will present an exciting program of innovative Australian works commissioned by them, adding computers and carving knives to conventional acoustic instruments, as well as a piece written specially for cochlear implant users. These contrast nicely with a wonderfully delicate piece from the 80s by Sciarrino

“Stunning contemporary classical interpretations…Golden Fur are changing the shape of chamber music without forsaking its roots.” The Age, December 20, 2008

PROGRAM David Chisholm – Golden Fur (2010) (for clarinet, cello & electric harmonium

Natasha Anderson – That Is That Not Is (2010) (for cello and computer) Salvatore

Rohan Drape – Another In Another Dark (2011) (for cello, clarinet & viola )

Cat Hope – Kuklinski’s Dream (2010) (for carving knives, clarinet, cello, viola & computer)

Tuesday April 5th @ the Make It Up Club

Three unique solo improvisers this week at the MIUC, each engaging with electronic abstraction, but through singularly refined methods. Utilising the Pure Data environment to create original digital synth patches with visual repercussions, Richie Cyngler generates layered improvisations by mapping the programs to unusual controller configurations, such as gyroscopic sensors and graphics tablets. Richard Pilkington, a longstanding performer in Melbourne's underground, dark-electronic music scene, will exhibit some of his latest experiments in abstracted sound art gestures in an improvised context. And jagged ex-Osakan electro-analogue maestro John Harte, performs a new solo project entitled Armpit or Arsehole, incorporating his interests in extreme metal guitar and fractured analogue electronic processing.
