Monday 28th Februrary, 2011 - BENE GESSERIT HOUSE NURSERIES

Yes yes, dark ambient etc experimental dronescapes freezing your soul etc with intense low-frequency black shamanic etc. But this shit's actually DOPE, man.

Bene Gesserit House Nurseries returns for its third year, starting the year off with the mighty and irrepressible Czura (collab project of Shane Reynolds and Rotteur), the post-dimensional fury of Electronic Shaman, and the blackened cinematic experimentation of GRIST. 9pm, LOOP in the City (23 Meyers Place). Be there, or be etc.

Tuesday March 1st @ the Make It Up Club

ACT emigre, Nick McCorriston debuts his latest solo explorations, akin to flinging longitudinal waves of digitally manipulated and layered feedback. The incredible Axximilation grace our stage again for a very rare performance of inspired and unique noisecore improv. Nic Tammens plays his first solo show for the year after recently returning from the US, and promises densely layered aural haystacks of crushing beauty. And a new duo featuring the brothers Kavanagh, combining abstracted sound sculptures punctuated by free-flowing percussion.

This week at MIUC, John Zorn's famous game-piece, COBRA, performed by the Park Street Cobra Collective. COBRA is one of Zorn's many structured improvisations, in which a group of improvisers are aided by a prompter, or conductor, to create a spontaneous composition that adheres to certain rules. COBRA is notable as one of Zorn's most volatile game-pieces, given the amount of freedom and autonomy the performers have in opposition to the conductor. Members of the ensemble can form break-away, or guerrilla subgroups, which can steer the music into radically different domains to those being developed by the conductor and the remainder of the ensemble. For the audience, this makes COBRA one of the most exciting and challenging of Zorn's structured improvisations; and for the performers, it makes it one of the most fun and subversive to participate in. The Park Street Cobra Collective comprises some of the most exciting and energetic emerging improvisers from the free jazz and avant garde scenes in Melbourne.

The Park Street Cobra Collective, featuring:
Andrew Brooks (saxophone)
Al McLean (guitar)
James Bowers (keyboards)
James Macauley (trombone)
Jon Smeathers (saxophone)
James McLean (drumkit)
Hugh Harvey (drumkit)
Sam Hall (drumkit)
Loni Thomson (voice)
Sam Pankhurst (bass)
Ron Romero (saxophone)

To Go Ro No Mi Ko - Curtain Band Room - 17 Feb 2011

Neumusak presents its second show for the year, and again it is an international headline act!

On Thursday 17th February the Curtin Band Room will unceremoniously be transformed into a psychedelic cesspool of noise gravy and ambient drones with spiralling sonic interludes as Japanese superhunk noise purveyors To Go Ro No Mi Ko make their debut in the sticky sexpit that is Ol' Melbrown Town.

With support and general stool grooming provided by three of Melburghs most innovative and imaginative sound (and live visual) artists:

Niko Niko (formerly Hungry Jackals), climbing out of dingey innner-urban warehouses to perform a rare full band show in formal venues in support of To Go Ro No Mi Ko's Australian tour -

Infinite Decimals, hot on the heals of their main support to Primitive Calculators (last Sunday) launching the Shape of Sound compilation, this Curtin show will be a warm-up for this audio-visual trio before they launch their own 3rd Cd (on Dreamland Recordings) on March 3rd at The Empress -

Angel Eyes the sound amazement of one man, namely Andrew Cowie - a must see -

Heirs, Dead & Stellarvore vs Abre Ojos @ Yah Yah's 13th Feb

Prepare for an evening of Rites, Ritual and Ruin as 27 Stone presents Heirs, Dead and Stellarvore vs. Abre Ojos Sunday Feb 13th at Yah-Yahs in Collingwood. Celebrate the beginning of Lupercalia, The Anniversary of Black Sabbath being released or even the birth of Jerry Springer on this fine night as we journey through the depths of low-end and back again. Doors at 6pm, first band at 7pm, Free Entry.

Upon returning to Melbourne after 67 shows across Europe and Japan, Heirs commenced work on their second album, Fowl. From wheezing blasts of industrial steam to weeping passages of gothic suspense, Fowl is a fully realised analysis of the repugnant. Its pugilistic rhythmic foundation, reverb soaked guitars, crackling electronics and deadpan dark-wave meditation create an abstract dronescape of industrial dirge and metallic ambience coalesced into an ambitious whole.

Comprised of members of Firewitch and Fangs Of A Teenage Evangelist, DEAD is upon us! The band formed in September and played their first show on Nov 26th at The Prague, Thornbury with Wicked City, Nunchukka Superfly & Teen Archer. They then hit up Adelaide the week after, East coast after that and are currently booking a South East Asian tour for May 2011! Have they done a recording yet? No. Has that hindered them booking shows? Slightly.

Stellarvore vs. Abre Ojos:

The crushing doom of Stellarvore meets the transcendant synesthesia of Abre Ojos for a special set that will enlighten as much as it destroys. Guitar, Drums and Modular Drones will do battle to reach the outer limits and all before the sun goes down!

Tuesday February 8th @ the Make It Up Club

This week, we feature two very special guests from Osaka, along with two of our favorite local iconoclasts. One of the most interesting performers of the new Japanese noise/performance scene, Harico specialises in unusual instruments in unconventional guises. Her recent use of contact-miced sewing machines has been a cause-celibre in Tokyo and Osaka. Cuckoo (from Psychedelic Desert, amongst other innovative post-onkyo-noise projects), is a master of the abrassive drone-cut and is joined by local absurdist and sonic-forger, Shaggs. And, thanks to WIFE for subbing for Nic Tammens (family committments in Tassie), who feature the two geniuses behind Gulag Projects and the new and amazing North Melbourne artspace, KIPL, Samaan Fieck and Eric Demetriou.
