This Wednesday the 31st of March @ Stutter...

4 Sets with Victor Lancaster

featuring collaborations with Bum Creek, Sean Baxter, Marco Cher-Gibard, Earle Stuart.

In Stutter's first ''4 Sets With...'' for the 2010 series, iconic Melbourne street drummer, Victor Lancaster, appears in collaboration with some of Melbourne's finest avant-improvisers. Armed with fiery vocal abstraction and a feline companion, Earle Stuart (from the legendary outsider Hip Hop collective, Curse Ov Dialect), joins Vic for a special collaboration of beats and blurts. Followed by a percussion duo of absurd gravitas, featuring Victor with internationally renowned avant schlagwerker, Sean Baxter. Victor will then be joined by MaxMSP/real-time processing genius, Marco Cher-Gibard for a performance where the street-drummer sounds are twisted and transformed before your very ears. Capping it all off, a keenly anticipated collaboration between Victor and radical sonic tricksters, Bum Creek, for a wildly transcendental, dada-inspired sound performance in the musique brut tradition.

  • Victor Lancaster (genius) with Bum Creek, featuring: Sam Karmel (multiple sound devices), Trev Clay (multiple sound devices) and Tarquin Manek (multiple sound devices)
  • Victor Lancaster (genius) with Marco Cher-Gibard (laptop processing)
  • Victor Lancaster (genius) with Sean Baxter (drumkit and junk)
  • Victor Lancaster (genius) with Earl Stuart (raps) and Tripod AKA Chicken the Cat (contact mic purrs and growls)

Visual Aktions by AMac (City Lights and Until Never) and Marcos Davidson

Robert Curgenven / Tarab in Castlemaine Sat 27th March

Saturday March 27th sat 8pm ICU - 1 Halford St., Castlemaine, $10
Not such a long drive from Melbourne

Punctum's 2010 SeedPod season at the ICU in Castlemaine opens with The Edge of the Earth by Robert Curgenven in collaboration with Eamon Sprod. More than working instruments of sound in a space, Robert does the extraordinary and plays the space as an instrument. Robert performed in an Undue Noise at the ICU over a year ago and was so inspired by the acoustic qualities of the space and his time making field recordings in around Castlemaine, he decided to return and spend a week researching and 'tuning' the ICU. In collaboration with Tarab/Eamon Sprod, Robert will perform the results of their research at the ICU on Sat 27th March at 8pm. From this experience, Robert will compose a CD which will be released during his forthcoming European tour.

Robert Curgenven's sound explores shifting layers in the fabric of fields of perception, creating vast landscapes from carefully detailed recordings through to immersive resonances via deft manipulations of sound pressure. Operating on the border of analogue technologies, in a variety of contexts from pure field recordings to feedback and instrumental harmonics to shape relations through sound, his work interweaves the unfolding of complex beauty and the quiet brutality of nature. From 1999 he lived in Australia's Northern Territory, where for much of the ensuing nine years he worked in small towns and remote locations in health, radio and the arts. He relocated to Europe at the beginning of 2008. Since returning to performing live in 2004 he has played at over 150 events throughout Australia and Europe, including Club Transmediale (Berlin), Feste dell Acqua (Vicenza), Mikro_Makro Festival (Slupsk), Centre for Contemporary Art (Gdansk), Radial System V (Berlin), Gallery for Contemporary Art (Leipzig), C/O Pop (Koln), Alice Springs Desert Festival, Darwin Festival, Electrofringe (Newcastle), Tura New Music Festival (Perth). He has collaborated with many Australian and international artists including Jörg Maria Zeger (guitar), Katrin Bethge (overhead projections), Andrea Belfi (Hapna), Attila Faravelli (Die Schachtel), Sumugan Sivanesan (Cronica), Jonathan McHugh (Confront), and leading Indigenous Australian artists. He has exhibited solo work at Centre for Contemporary Art (Torun, Poland), O? Gallery (Milan, Italy) and also group work as part of the Transmediale (Berlin), the 10ms (10 Years of Microsound) exhibition at Diapason Gallery (New York), in addition to gallery and non-gallery spaces throughout Australia, in London, France and Germany.

tarab/eamon sprod explores re-contextualised field recordings and tactile gestures formed into dynamic, psycho-geographical compositions inspired by discarded things, found things, junk, dirt, the ground, rocks, dust, wind, walking aimlessly, scratchy things, decay, and most if not all the things he sees and hears. He has performanced and/or collaborated with local and international artists including Camilla Hannan, Thembi Soddell, Ernie Althoff, Eric La Casa and Cedric Peyronnet, and has performed through Australia, as well as in Europe and North America. His composed sound works have been released on Naturestrip, 23five inc., Trente Oiseaux, Compost and Height and Recorded Fields.

Slayin' Axe-Shun - Round and Round - 28 Mar 2010

Round and Round Records, once again, hosts a Sunday arvo of Slayin' Axe-Shun. Not necessarily in this order:

MICROVOM - First show in almost a year, changing shit up from the usual permacultural electronic maelstrom. Featuring collage costumes by Body Cult of the Patanj and Oranj Punjabi.
LARAL - Slayin' axe drone. Playing off the back of a new - totally Broodal - cassette 'Bound For Nowhere'.
GALACTOGOGUE - Mark Skelton will be tearing new sonic assholes; as per usual.
(forwarded from Sean McMorrow)

Saturday, 20 March 2010

This Wednesday the 24th of March @ Stutter...

+ BREATHING SHRINE - improvised, psychedelic drone excursions by Bonnie Mercer (Grey Daturas, Must Have No Magic, etc.) and Robert Mayson (Grey Daturas, Whitehorse, etc).

+ ROBERT CURGENVEN (12K, Recorded Fields) - custom vinyl/dubplate | room resonances | field recordings

Robert Curgenven's solo performance showcasing material from his new album ''Oltre'' is a compelling excursion into space and vibration, combining custom made vinyl, field recordings and resonances from everyday objects, through an absorbing physical immersion in sound.

+ POLETOPRA is visual artist and extreme noise practitioner and enthusiast Marco Fusinato and compositional and prepared instrumental genius Anthony Pateras, appearing respectively on electronics + guitar and analogue synthesiser

+ NAT BATES - a rare performance on sampler, shedding light on an intense period in the studio working on his SAD (Sound A Day) project: a recreation of the Bernard Parmegiani masterpiece 'La Création du Monde' using nothing but samples from iconic rock songs. Nat is perhaps more widely known as director of the annual Liquid Architecture festival.

Rob Curgenven

Europe-based Curgenven's live performances involve a specially prepared dubplate (vinyl recording) and its use within an integrated system of subsonic feedback from ventilators, acoustically gated binaural microphones, modal micro-variations in guitar feedback, field-recordings from across remote areas of Australia and the live, physical interplay of the turntable, dubplate and stylus - combining to create a field which moves beyond the original recordings and their individual spaces. Based on his new release OLTRE, which has had excellent international reviews. Turntabling with a difference.

The Doubleother

'spent years - in parks strumming acoustics in - pubs banging electrics, all waste & mere memories; now to re-re-invent a bastion, youthful expression transforming angst into midlife anguish, grow damn you/but/how, pick it/up, can't touch it/but/need to, make a chords/why, the sounds of/it/it's, want nothing/romantics/remain - chains, on the essence/of electricity and metal' but worry/not it's only (just, in) and (seim-eon)-al as 'thedoubleother' doubled electrics [no holding]. In other words, dualling guitars from Simon Howard and Justin Bull.

Force Fed Smile

treated loops that try to become song's yet fail in the attempt and become a psychedelic dreamscape. Sounds by Tim Townsend.

A very rare performance from this internationally renowned, abstract improv trio, featuring 3 of Melbourne’s most accomplished and adventurous. This appearance by Pateras/Baxter/Brown at the MIUC is made even more special by the fact that there will be no piano! That’s right, the first P/B/B electro set in Melbourne in over 5 years, featuring Anthony Pateras on the Doepfer modular analogue synthesizer and Revox reel to reel. And, unleashing a new set of extreme improv-noise explorations on the humble electric guitar, the maestro brutagist of monolithic subsonics, Marco Fusinato. Heavy times indeed!
