Stated Sound is a forum for the ideas, concepts and attitudes that produce sound and media cultures at a local and national level, which in turn inform our experience of them. Stated Sound will develop a dialogue that outlines what key individuals believe to be contemporary approaches in devising sound and media events, and how they believe them to resonate with their audiences and contexts. This discussion will include the contributions of festival directors, artists, writers, educators and journalists who have a long running, as well and current role in these fields. All are welcome and invited to follow on to West Space, where at 3 p.m there will be a performance from Peter Blamey, Dale Gorfinkle and Rosalind Hall as part of the Liquid Architecture 10 Melbourne program.

Light food and beverage will be provided free of charge.

Liquid Architecture 9-12 July 2009

Melbourne Programme online here

Dave Brown upcoming shows

forwarded from Dave Brown:
------------------

The next incarnation of "Plump" takes off this Saturday night at the Performance Space at Carriageworks in Sydney.
This group comprises sculptor/light artist Marc Rogerson, sound artist Philip Samartzis and myself. Marc has constructed a
"Large Room Sized Instrument" from which I generate sounds, he performs on internal lighting systems and Philip diffuses and manipulates sounds.
It's a more performative follow up to our installation/performance "Cluster" at the Margaret Lawrence gallery last year.
This is the first of three performances we'll be doing in Sydney, Brisbane (Powerhouse Sat 4th July) and Melbourne (North Melbourne Arts House, Sat 11th July) over the three coming weekends as part of Liquid Architecture 10. The festival celebrating it's 10th anniversary.
Further details can be found at the Liquid Architecture website:

Also on Sunday night I'll be joining Adam Simmons in a duo performance to help mark the culmination of Adams regional, Australian, solo Tour.
This final show on his tour will be at "Monkey" 181 St George's Road Fitzroy North. It gets underway at 7:30 PM and entry costs $10 and $5 concession.

Adam will play solo and then I'll join him for the finale.

Then next Wednesday, 1st of July, I'll be performing a duo with Chris Abrahams from Sydney and we'll be supported by Spartak from Canberra.
The show is at the Empress Hotel 714 Nicholson St Fitzroy North and gets underway at 8:45PM. $10 and $7 entry.

Lucky Number: the music of Syd Clayton - Iwaki Auditorium - 17 July 2009

Syd Clayton's (1939-1994) work has been described as magical, achieving a Zen-like veneer of simplicity that masks a deep complexity of ideas both musical and philosophical. Using a toy roulette wheel and chance operations to compose with, Clayton occupies a unique place in Melbourne's experimental music history.
Lucky Number director Barnaby Oliver challenges a new cast of performers from Melbourne's experimental music community to interpret Clayton's music in a fashion that is both true to the original spirit and injects new energy. Featuring: Adam Simmons, Mark Cauvin, The Crystal Set, Clinton Green, Barnaby Oliver. Visuals and projections by Hugh McSpedden Lucky Number is a rare, one-night-only exploration of one of Melbourne's most neglected composers that is not to be missed.

This week at MIUC, some unique performers from the scuzz-pop-netherworlds of noise and sonority, including: Melbourne assassins of the noise/grind interface, Holy Boner, team up with Japanese didgeridoo virtuoso, Yoshi Hongan, for a collaboration that defies genre expectations—sublime (yet brutal) noise with incredible communication; 3 of the city’s most adventurous projects from the noise-pop underground (Super Star, 8008 and Pissy Paw) combine for an exclusive performance (this will be one of Olle Holmberg’s last performances before heading back to Norway); and the incredible Dan Brady (a significant contributor to such pioneering groups as Occult Blood and the Psych Ward Cult) presents his solo project EITHER/OR.
  • Holy Boner with Yoshi. Featuring: Brad Smith (drums, junk and electronics), Nik Kennedy (bass, clarinet and electronics) with Yoshi Hongan (didgeridoo, vocals and electronics)
  • Super Star + 8008 + Pissy Paw. Featuring Olle Holmberg (sampler, effects and vocals), Jesse Dimmick (saxophone and recorder), Esther Edquist (synthesizer, keyboards and vocals) and Kieran Hegarty (guitar)

Undecisive God limited edition 7" with amazing handmade covers

Undecisive God 'A Vinyl Construction' 7" - Undecisive God's recent experiments with multiple turntables and prepared/broken records come to full fruition here with a release that poses questions both to the use of turntables as instruments and vinyl as a format. The music - crunchy multi-layered improvisations/processes that randomly sample small broken chunks from the original vinyl materials - is itself presented on 7" vinyl, in handmade covers reconstructed from old record covers and broken vinyl shards; each cover is different, individually numbered and an interesting one-off creation in itself. Limited edition of fifty copies from Revolution Records, available from Shame File Music, Sunshine & Grease, and Missing Link.

Also new on Shame File:

Screwtape 'Whenever I hear the words Pop Culture, I reach for my gun' mini CD - noise/power electronics using meat as a sound source!

Mark Cauvin 'Transfiguration' 2CD -
Reputedly the first of it's kind, a double CD tour de force of solo double bass, performing works from composers like Scelsi, Berio and more.

OREN AMBARCHI
Oren Ambarchi's works are hesitant and tense extended songforms located in the cracks between several schools: modern electronics and processing; laminal improvisation and minimalism; hushed, pensive songwriting; the deceptive simplicity and temporal suspensions of composers such as Morton Feldman and Alvin Lucier; and the physicality of rock music, slowed down and stripped back to its bare bones, abstracted and replaced with pure signal. Ambarchi has performed and recorded with a diverse array of artists including Sunn 0)), Fennesz, Otomo Yoshihide & John Zorn. www.orenambarchi.com

MARCO FUSINATO
Alongside exhibiting in gallery contexts where he’s currently featured in Sonic Youth’s ‘Sensational Fix’ exhibition, Marco Fusinato has had a long history of working with (and making) experimental music. His sound works explore the language of noise. His primary focus is on the unconventional use and abuse of the electric guitar and related electronic devices. ‘He extends the traditional language of the guitar to distressed oblivion, compounding deracinated electronic detritus into over-amplified dreamweapons, unleashing tsunamis of ecstatic free noise’. Apart from his solo performances Fusinato also plays in the group POLETOPRA (with composer Anthony Pateras).

CANDLESNUFFER
David Brown has been involved in the Melbourne experimental, art rock/punk rock scene since the mid-seventies. The focus of his solo project “candlesnuffer” has increasingly centred on the development of composing techniques which meld opposing streams like conventional electro-
acoustic methods with noise and rock and also the development of a vocabulary of tiny acoustic sounds enlarged outside their normal context. He has continued to develop a vocabulary that runs the gamut from rock bassist through experimental guitarist to sound artist. His group projects include Pateras/Baxter/Brown, Wester Grey, Bucketrider, & Embers. www.candlesnuffer.org

MISTY RA
Local guitarist Justin Bull has had extensive experience in Central Victoria and New Zealand alternative music scenes with his loopy/extended guitar work. Founding member of local improv group Planet Caravan.

The Un-Australian String Quartet feat.Jon Rose this Sunday at Horse Bazaar 07/06/09

A non stop 90 minute audio-visual show, featuring the parallel universes of amplified strings and the sounds and images of fence wires.

On stage for the first (and perhaps last) time are The Un-Australian String Quartet. featuring:

Jon Rose – violin, tenor violin
Erkki Veltheim
– violin, viola
James Rushford
– viola
Anthea Caddy – violoncello

On the big screen is archive video footage of fences in the Australian outback played by Jon Rose and Hollis Taylor.

This is a rare chance to hear some of Melbourne’s finest string players with violinist, improviser, composer, instrument maker & hacker - Jon Rose.

For over 35 years, Jon Rose has been at the sharp end of experimental, new and improvised music. Central to that practice has been 'The Relative Violin' project, a unique output, rich in content, realising almost everything on, with, and about the violin - and string music in general. Most celebrated is the worldwide Fence project; least known are the relative violins created specifically for and in Australia.

For more go to www.jonroseweb.com

Anthea Caddy is a cellist and sound artist interested in the relationship between recording, spatialisation, and the instrument. Exploring the cello’s textural, spatial and dynamic capabilities, she draws reference points from electro-acoustic music and sound art.

James Rushford is a young Melbourne-based composer/performer. As a composer, James has been commissioned by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Speak Percussion, Team of Pianists, CUSP Gallery/Chunky Move Dance Company, The Australian National Academy of Music, the Melbourne International Arts Festival (2006), the Now Now (2009) and the 21:100:100 project (a collaboration with Oren Ambarchi and Marco Fusinato). His regular ensembles include the rock duo Johnny Saw Horses, an improvisation duo with Joe Talia, as well as the avant-classical ensemble Golden Fur (premiering works by Anthony Pateras, Kate Neal, Marco Fusinato, Phill Niblock, Alexander Garsden and Jaap Blonk).

Erkki Veltheim is a violinist, violist, composer and improviser. He is a member of contemporary music ensemble ELISION, improvisers' ensemble Australian Art Orchestra and country punk band Roadkill Rodeo. He is a regular performer with Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu, and has also performed with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Australian Chamber Orchestra, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Ensemble Modern (Frankfurt), musikFabrik (Cologne) and Australian indigenous singer-songwriters' collective Black Arm Band.

abre ojos - elements DVD

Elements is a release of a series of improvised audio-visual tracks based around the four alchemical elements of Earth, Air, Water & Fire. Drawing on the aesthetics of the Crowley Tarot painted by Lady Frieda Harris with imagery appropriated from 50’s propaganda films these pieces combine long evolving drones from modular synths with sound reactive looping visuals and animated mandalas to create an immersive synaesthetic experience designed to give time for reflection and meditation.

Each week, for four weeks, a new element track was released on the Darkwinter net label.

The abre ojos DVD for 'elements' is now available! It features the four tracks, Earth, Air, Water, Fire, plus an extra bonus track, Spirit which is only available on this DVD. The DVD also features mp3 versions of all five tracks that you can download on to your favourite device. This is a hand numbered limited edition run of 50 copies.

Cost is $15USD including postage to anywhere in the world via Paypal directly through abreojos.net or from the button below. Trades are also welcomed, make contact thru the website.

The official DVD launch gig will be at Stutter on the 17th June, stay tuned for more details closer to the date.
