PINGS (Simon Whitehead and Barnaby Oliver)

PINGS springs directly from the geographical distance between two collaborators. Working from their locales they explore the physical space between them through rivers and air and a range of other terrains with their own qualities, such as the web, phone, post, and less tangible links of memory and synchronicity.

Since January 2008 the two artists began an ongoing exchange of performance and materials from their local rivers in Abercych, west Wales and Melbourne, Australia. Although a few thousand miles apart they share the intention to regularly meet and approach their rivers as an unbroken body of water through which they correspond. Their instincts are improvisational and over time they have been building a body of performance material from these shared events. Linked by their shared intentions and the physical rivers this material (in sound and image) begins to create its own character responsive to season, the time of day, the level of water and the meandering presence of each artist.

This unedited material is then shared through the net and snail mail and the artists now invite you to subscribe to these events through podcast, email and post.

You may visit the project archive online, and subscribe to PINGS as a podcast / rss 2 feed, at

PINGS is funded by an Artsadmin (London) 'Roaming' Bursary.

"When Worlds Collide", Horse Bazaar, Tuesday 25th

On Tuesday night Adam Nash and I will play music on a virtual island while physically located at the fabulous bar/venue Horse Bazaar.

Adam has created a series of virtual sound-sculptures called Seventeen Unsung Songs. We'll log into Second Life and move our avatars around the island, playing the sculptures and projecting our view of SL onto the walls of the bar and into the PA.

We're interested in questions like:
* Is this show located in the virtual world, the real world, or both ?
* Is live performance about sound and vision only or does it involve other factors as well?

Admission free .. starts at 830 pm .. hope you can make it, -Greg

Mike Cooper/Jem & Elise/SPIT @ MIUC 18th March

Mike Cooper (U.K./Italy) @ Make It Up Club 18/3/2008

& the press said............................................................................................................

MIKE COOPER - a musician capable of being coherent and convincing when playing blues, Hawaiian or free improvised music...leaving his personal mark on everything he touches... (La Repubblica - Italy)

Showcasing squeezed, infinitesimal string plucks and pick guard scrapes at the top, his guitar playing is soon transmitted from bordering on Bailey or Roger Smith styles to referencing Ramblin Jack Elliott or Dave Van Ronk... rattling reverb and minimalist note patterns to suggest it is part of a recital taking place in a Mississippi Delta on the moon. (Ken Waxman - UnAMERICAN ACTIVITIES NEWS # 55-1 August 2005)

Much as David Sylvian, Derek Bailey and Christian Fennesz should be lauded for their work on the former's Blemish album, Cooper's audacious, unfettered performances mark an equally inspiring advance in marrying experimental sonics with song. - (Keith Moline - Wire Feb. 2005.)

Jem & Elise (www. myspace. com/eliseandjem) & SPIT supporting.

Please come along!!!!!!

LULLATONE (Japan) play Maximum Arousal this Sunday!

The incredible electro-pop genius of Japan’s Lullatone is finally headed to Melbourne. Their work with electronics, toy instruments and other devices has earned them a reputation as one of the key groups reinvigorating melody today. They're so respected in fact that Sanrio invited them to create the official theme song to Hello Kitty! Joining Lullatone on this avant pop edition of the Maximum Arousal series are Melbourne’s Crayon Fields who play intricate, atmospheric pop songs that recall the minor key majesty and close-knit harmonies of 60s maestros such as the Zombies, the Byrds and the Beach Boys

Maximum Arousal Tues Mar 18 - Cor Fuhler (Holland) w/Ambarchi/Avenaim + Robin Fox!

The Toff - 252 Swanston St. Melbourne

More than any other instrument, the piano has a sound, a history and a repertoire that can easily overwhelm a player’s individuality. How many times have you seen someone sit down and put his or her fingers to the keyboard only to hear a generic “piano” sound that turns the music into so much sonic whitewash? Dutchman Cor Fuhler seeks to take this classic instrument beyond our usual perceptions to another level entirely, specializing in sustained sounds thru the use of various string stimulators. Fuhler's playing can evoke a gamelan ensemble, tone generators, percussion and strings with extensive use of electronics, such is the variety of his sounds. Tonight Fuhler will perform in trio with renowned Australian artists Oren Ambarchi & Robbie Avenaim.

Also appearing is Robin Fox in a rare multi-laser performance. A Fox laser show envelops the audience in synchronous sound and light information, the experience resembles a synaesthetic experience where what you hear is also what you see. The same electricity generated to move the speaker cones is sent simultaneously to high-speed motors that deflect the laser light on an x/y axis converting sonic vibration into light movement. Always mindblowing & not to be missed!!!

714 Nicholson St. North Fitzroy.
Doors 7:45pm. $5.00
First band on stage by 8pm.
Finishes 10pm.

The Boy Who Spoke Clouds

The Boy Who Spoke Clouds began as the solo project ofAdam Casey, guitarist and singer of the now defunctSeascapes of the Interior. Slowly it has evolved invarious formats, currently a 5 piece featuringacoustic guitar, banjo, piano, accordion drum-kit andethereal vocal harmonies. Exploring the full dynamicrange of acoustic instrumentation, proving that a bandcan sound large and harrowing without amplification. The ensemble engages in the pummelling sound ofartists such as the Swans and Godflesh, but attemptsto achieve the same fullness with acousticinstruments. The combination of these disparatemusical traditions unite into a glorious whole, takingthe audience on a dark journey into the humancondition.

Quint is a new project created by Zac Keiller &Barnaby Oliver to explore improvisational music in alive setting. There are no rehearsals, and no priorthought. The only plan is to follow the creation ofmusic and/or sound wherever it may lead.Hope to see you there.Zac Keiller.

Melbourne based 'fractured kaleidoscope pop sound artist extraordinaire' Francis Plagne's work combines electronics, field recordings, instrumental improvisation and 'sweetly awkward psych-pop'. In this performance he will appear alongside Connal Parsley, Joe Talia, Ned Collette, Anthony Pateras, members of Snawklor and others, in a set swinging between the accessible, the awkward and the adventurous.

POLETO PRA (Pateras/Fusinato)
Visual artist and extreme noise practitioner and enthusiast Marco Fusinato and compositional and prepared instrumental genius Anthony Pateras join forces appearing respectively on electronics + guitar and analogue synthesiser, promising a set of carefully nuanced brutality.

The Ancients is the child of Mum Smokes members Jon Mitchell, in which full reign is given to his ability to craft charming and formally experimental pop miniatures, accompanied by full band.

Christina Tester is a young sound artist who explores everyday materials and the human voice. At the Toff she presents a work for highly amplified kitchen materials
